What speed SD card?

I have fast cards in my D500, but I shoot sports and try for BIF so I need the speed. But I don’t want to spend a lot on speed for cards in an X-H1 that will use on the street but never on sports or anything else needing the speed of the D500. What might be a good speed? 90/ mps maybe?

Thanks!

Have you consulted your manual or sent an inquiry to Nikon? Might be your best source of info.

Try this testing site and compare their results for the D500 with how much you want to spend.

This card is for a Fuji X-H1. I got it used so no manual, but I didn’t think to look online. Good idea.

Spend it anyway.

Such phantom problems. Buy more than you really need. You already did that when you bought the H1. Now you’re gonna quibble over a cheap thing like a card ? Buy the fastest card in the shop and know you won’t have foolish notions keeping you up at night. Sleep well my friend !

PS
Did you buy that xh1 that keh has for under $900 ? I was really tempted about that one ! Not many around. Very short production run.

Why not buy the same cards you use in the D500? Very little difference in price between mediocre and fast cards, and that way you can use them interchangeably. (I use the same cards in both my Canon 5D4 for sports with fast bursts and my Fuji X-T2 for that reason.

I've been using 95mbs with no issues, but I would advise you to try what you have and depending on your habits, they will likely be fine. I get the impression that some folks like to see how long it takes to load the buffer and it must be important for them. After many thousands of bird shots, I have yet to load the buffer, but that's me. I do have some faster cards and it makes no difference to me. Try what you've got!

Right. Makes no difference ... becuz:

When doing a burst you’re not writing to the card, only to the buffer. Most current cameras have fairy large buffers so they absorb the whole burst and then write to the card after the fact.

If you have a roomy buffer but your camera forces you to noticeably wait between bursts ... especially the longer bursts ... then THAT is when you need a faster writing speed for your card.

Usually the card’s readout speed is boldly on the front of the package but the writing speed is buried in small print gobbledegook on the back :-(

That is fast enough for most still photography, certainly for your planned usage.

Agreed, the D500 has a nice roomy buffer and for most shooting, the slower cards are fine!

However fast the rating of the card you use you can only operate as fast as the device you are using can write to it or read from it.

For specifics you really need to consult pages 387 and 388 of your owners manual entitled Memory Card capacity. It will show you the image quality, image size, file size, number of images and buffer capacity.
I believe it will tell you what you need to know.
I use the SanDisk 64GB Extreme PRO UHS-I SDXC Memory Card, it has a write speed of 170 mps. Big cost, it will set you back $20.00. WOW. Expensive huh.
I use the D500 for birds in flight with this disk and my buffer is 200 images. More than I will ever need.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.
