Very unhappy with Adobe and B&H Video - warning don't buy Adobe plans from B&H (or other resellers)

In January, not being able to decide whether I should get Adobe's Lightroom plan which comes with 1TB cloud storage, or the Creative Cloud plan which comes with both Lightroom and Photoshop but only 20MB cloud storage, and having been reassured by the Adobe website that one plan could easily convert to another, I purchased the Creative Cloud plan so that I could evaluate whether I had any use for Photoshop or not.

After two months of use, I have determined that Lightroom is more than sufficient for my needs and that I don't need Photoshop. However, 20MB is hardly sufficient. So I decided the time had come to convert my plan. I logged into the Adobe website, found the help page for changing your plan, and tried to follow the instructions. Unfortunately, the instructions referred to buttons that I needed to click, but those buttons were not appearing for me!

Next thing I did was to open a chat to get some help. The Adobe chatter assured me that she could change my plan for me in just a couple of minutes. Well that didn't happen. After an hour of "please bear with me, still working on it" messages, she finally came back to say that because I had purchased my plan from B&H as an activation code, I could not change the plan.

Then she offered to cancel my plan and start me on a new Lightroom plan. That might have been OK, except that when I asked if I would get a pro-rata refund or if the unused part of the Creative Cloud plan would be credited to reduce the cost of the Lightroom plan, the answer was no. Then she offered me a $10 discount on the Lightroom plan. So I lose $70-80 of unused Creative Cloud against a $10 discount. No thanks.

What really burns me though, is that neither Adobe nor B&H tell you in advance that a plan purchased through B&H is NOT the same as a plan purchased directly from Adobe.

I also contacted B&H, but they said that since more than 30 days had passed since my purchase that they could do nothing.

You bought a 12 month contract and can't change the terms of the contract after 30 days.

Inconvenient, but nothing to be pissed off about. You got what you paid for.

However, you might contact Henry P at B&H to see if something can be done. Sometimes the front line people are not given the flexibility to meet the customers expectations, even when they are looking for something they are not entitled to.

It appears that you either failed to read the terms carefully before signing up, or didn't fully understand them.

The problem is that Adobe indicates that you CAN change to a different plan but they don't disclose that this does not apply when the contract is purchased through a re-seller. Additionally, as confirmed by my one hour chat session, chat support personnel also don't know this. Nor does the Adobe published FAQ for changing a plan (contract).

Thanks for the name of the person at B&H to contact. I will try that.

Sorry, typo, GB not MB.

Here is a link on the Adobe website for how to change your plan, and the information I relied on at the time I made my purchase, that a plan CAN BE CHANGED: https://helpx.adobe.com/manage-account/using/change-plan.html

Or, of course, somebody created a video to show you just how easy it is to change a plan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Kg9sp8nvMQ

But, for me, because I bought from B&H this apparently does not apply.

Well, at the moment it may seem as if LR is all you need, but pretty soon you may encounter things that LR just cannot do, due to it's primary function being preparing images for proofs and for finishing in a raster editor. You haven't gotten to that point just yet, but you may, especially as you gain skills with LR. I would not be so quick to abandon PS. It is a pretty amazing program that can run rings around all raw converters.

It seems to me that most here want to "blame the victim." How many of us really ever really read the "fine print," of the licenses?

See Linda's post above. Big clue that if you aren't sure it is what you want, you should think again before buying. That was right up front.

You're right. Fine print rarely gets a thorough reading. When that happens the "victim" is only a victim of their own lack of thoroughness. I almost never read fine print but I sure don't point fingers at others if I get burned because of it. Don't know if the fine print would have made a difference in this case, but, if the necessary info was there and the OP didn't bother to read it then it is his fault, not the seller's.

Actually, I'm not aware that you can convert your plan to just Lightroom. LR and PS are part of the photography plan. I think the only difference is in the storage you choose. At the end of the term cancel the plan, subscribe to the Adobe plan through the Adobe website, and the LR catalog should connect up with the new plan. Also, PS is a great program that will offer you additional options for processing, it can do things that LR cannot do. A great combo to get the most from your images.
