Hi all

I have a problem with a Tamron 150-600 G2 lens, used on a Nikon D500. The lens has worked fine up until now. What happens is when zoomed fully to 600mm the autofocus hunts rapidly, never able to lock, if I back the zoom off slightly it achieves lock and is also ok through the rest of the range. I have the camera set up for BBF. Have tried resetting the camera and resetting the lens to default via Tamron tap in unit, lens has latest Firmware. In Live view mode the lens does not hunt so much but still does not achieve good focus at 600mm.
all my other lens work ok, including a Tamron 100-400. I don't have access to another camera to try the lens on, local camera store closed because of lock down. Any suggestions out there in case I am missing something? Otherwise I guess it's back to Tamron.

cheers

Tried various distances, hundreds of feet to 15-20 feet. Same result at 600mm.

Time to send it in... Has it been dropped or banged into? Possibly an element isn't in a place where it should be...

Hi

Has not been dropped or banged. very light use. Still under warranty. I think I'll wait until we get back to some sort of normality returns before I send it in..
cheers

At the longest FL, it’s f6.3 wide open, and I wouldn’t have thought the D500 wouldn’t have had any trouble with AFing that. It does make sense though that the AF is slower at the longer FLs since the aperture decreases.

Try Googling the symptoms and see if anyone else has had the issue and what they did...

Have you tried:
1- Connecting to a dock and checking for a firmware update?
2- Connecting to a dock and re-installing the firmware?
3- Find another Tamron 150-600 G2 lens, perhaps borrow from a friend, and check to make sure it isn't the camera.

If you do decide to send it in, wait until this virus thing is over. I sent my 150-600mm G2 in for repair just before the crisis hit the USA. It is still there, they are locked down & I don't know when I will get my lens back. I called and the one who answered my call had no idea when they will be open again. Their repair center is in Cammack, NY.

What distance setting did you click on on the side of the barrel of the lens? You may have inadvertently taken it off of the infinity setting.

I had a very similar problem with the Tamron 18-400, at times when extended to 400mm it would stop focusing. I would have to zoom back to around 200mm and then out again to get it to focus. Sent the lens to Tamron, it was sent back with the note that there was nothing wrong with the lens. Still does it, but not too often as I seldom use the lens now.
