How did you adapt that Angenieux to the Canon (or are you using some other camera with that?)

The Canon can only be adapted for mirrorless. It has a special bayonet mount and a few custom adaptors are available. Mine is for Sony E mount by rareadapters and includes a few mm of extension for closeups. The Angenieux fits firmly down into an M65 helicoid, then to Sony with an M65 to M42 adapting ring and M42 to Sony E adapting ring.

I agree with the suggestions to go the f1.8 an extremely good lens. Shot many weddings using this gem.

To be honest I rented both lenses and shot a few shots around town and in the studio. The prices jump rather quickly when you go in that wide of an aperture. I actually ended up not spending the money and bought the 85mm 1.8 usm model for several reasons. One it was 249.00 on B&H where the others were bringing in over 1300.00. The quality of the photo was not good enough for me to warrant spending that kind of extra money. Yes the 1.2 did have a slightly better creamy background look but you can achieve that also by moving the subject away from the background instead of right against it. As far as the focus goes. I really could not tell the difference between the lenses as to which focused faster. They all seemed fast to me. I tried these lenses on a Canon 6DMarkII. In the end I believe really the choice is how much money do you want to spend. If it’s just to take photos of the grand kids then I believe I would buy the lesser and put my money into something else like possible lighting and tripods.
To be honest I rented both lenses and shot a few s... (show quote)

I also got the 1.8, great lens for the $s, got mine even on special 2019...

Whatever you end up with you will enjoy taking photos of yr grandchild...
It has been fun for me as well...
Their level of cooperation will vary widely as they grow.
The 3 yr old tends to frown
the 5 yr old needs to be bribed to engage
the 8 yr old will now participate ( partly cause I gave her a digital camera )

A lot of fun. I very rarely crop photos... believe me you will when shooting active kids.

I'm looking forward to it. As I posted a bit earlier, I'm leaning towards the f1.4 with IS. I'm sure the f1.8 (much cheaper) is a great lens for the money, but with the situations I'll be shooting (a lot of it low light) the added f-stop and IS will likely be a nice thing to have. I will probably end up getting a Canon re-furbished unit from the Canon Store (that's how I bought a couple of Speedlites and my 6D). I'm not in a big hurry, so I'll watch the store for a good deal. Up until a couple days ago they had two deals you could apply to that lens and get it for $1079. I suspect that later in the year there will be better deals. I have a birthday coming up in August - maybe I'll get lucky and they will have some good deals then - or maybe for Christmas.

are we dealing with a case of G.A.S. ? I have a 80-200mm L lens. I wonder how well it would work as a portrait lens at the 80mm setting?

It won't look like an f/1.4 lens at f/1.4 ...

At the zoom's widest aperture, the question is how sharp is the lens and does the narrow depth of field fit your artistic vision? For that blown background, you may like an even longer focal length your zoom provides.

Probably just fine.

I had been using my Nikon 70-200 for portraits. I was selling an 85mm 1.8 for a friend and tried it out on a shoot along with my zoom. The prime focused much closer, was a lot more manageable size and weight-size and had more pleasing bokeh at the same aperture.
Sold it here on the hog and regret not buying it for myself.

Thank you. - I'm guessing from your user name you're retired Navy?

Yes sir. Made E-8 in Uncle Sam's canoe club on a total of 5 guided missile destroyers. My grandson Tim joined last year, says things have changed a bit since my day. No more hazing, females on board, and what sounds like better chow. Seems I should have waited till now to enlist. Stay safe and think positive.
