I am a web designer. When it comes to choosing go by number of sales for each picture. I tell my clients to use the 80/20 rule. 20% of your products usually make 80% of your sales. Chances are that half of your pictures don't sell. Start there when it domes to removing them. If there are too many choices to go through people leave out of laziness.

There is no hard and fast rule. As photographers we love all of our pictures. If they haven't sold in a certain timeframe remove them.

I would keep each category (folder) to a limit of... (I can't decide). I have a folder structure with folders within folders, within folders, etc...

I have a website "woodywud.smugmug.com"
My question is this
My ship gallery has 3612 pictures
My tugboat gallery has 1490 pictures
landscape 198
Stuff gallery 86 pictures
My question is mainly my ship pictures. How many pictures of the same topic is too much.
I average yearly hits is 150,000
Any suggestions on weeding some out or starting a new gallery for 2020

A lot of photos not in focus. First thing is to full every photo that is not in focus. When people see so many out of focus, they will leave, and not come back.

Way to many too many. People will never go through that many. A dozen or so at a time. Rotate monthly, keeping attention, adding a couple and taking away a couple.

I suggest the first place to start culling is right in your camera while you are shooting a particular subject or very soon afterward. After that putting things in categories is a good idea. One problem is when a subject could be legitimately placed in more than one category. Then you have to think about heiarchies.

I concur with most of my colleagues. You must curate your collection of photos. Many are out of focus or near duplicates of other photos. Get each category down to 25 or so of your best work.
