I've been using H&R Block tax software since TurboTax had problems doing state taxes correctly. I noticed something unpleasant this year.

Although I have my taxes from last year on my computer - a T18 file - the program will not open them. Doing a browse for them, they don't even show up as a choice in H&R. When I tried to open the T18 file independently, nothing can read it. The H&R program said I must buy last year's program to open last year's report. I thought it would be simple enough to re-install last year's program and use that to open the file. No good. Apparently, H&R doesn't do a download when you buy their program. They must install it directly.

In the past, H&R was able to access last years program with no trouble, but not this year. I have a paper copy of my report, so I can use that, but the file I saved can be opened only by H&R. Doing my taxes this year, I see there's an option to save the tax report as a PDF, so that's what I'm doing.

Maybe this is just a glitch for me alone, but it's an unpleasant one.

I use the H&R tax programs and had no problems loading the information from last years return.
Saving as a PDF file has been available with H&R Block for years so I have been saving both the T** and PDF file. The nice thing about the PDF file is you don't need the H&R program to open the return. Most everybody has a PDF reader on their computers or they should have one.

Hey, Jerry, thanks for the H&R tell. I have been thinking of switching from Turbo Tax. They have made it a pain in the derrierre. In the past I could use a 1095-B (Va health coverage) for proof of health insurance, but not now. And Turbo does not have a use standard deduction option - you have to put in deductions andthen Turbo chooses the standard.

Jerry FYI : AARP will do your taxes free of charge. Only catch there is a limit of 69.000 and below. Here in my area United Way also has a govt grant for free tax preparation. As of last year all software got updated. Because of the virus as you know the time to prepare taxes got extended.

I have previouslyprepared taxes for Liberty and H & R Block for several years which required taking tax classes every year. This year I was going to volunteer to prepare taxes for AARP. I went to the orientation. They were going to teach you to use a software program (Tax slayer). They were not going to teach actual tax preparation. So, I quit. You can't learn taxes from a software program, because some of the questions they asked are worded "strange". 2 friends later told me that they had used AARP once, and had a bad experience with the preparers not knowing what they were doing.

Yeah, I tried everything. H&R puts it in a folder on C under User. Unfortunately, it didn't see it and open it. It's there, but I can't do a thing with it.

Since you did locate the file:
Did you try clicking, or double clicking on the file, and then select "open with" and then specify the H&R Block Program?

A couple of years ago I was using HRB's tax software and had a problem because I thought they had a problem with the state return. I called them for clarification after multiple attempts to contact the state for clarification. I could never get to anyone at the state. I got routed around HRB thru thire entire operation and they decided they did not know and told me to visit the nearest local branch office.

The branch office couldn't answer the question either and basically said I should just guess or pay the office to do my taxes---and get no refund for the program I'd purchased. I guessed wrong and subsequently got a bill for about a $300 penalty. I called HRB multiple times to get help on the issue and got nowhere. The last couple of guys said they would call back. No one ever did.

Screw H&R Block. I hope this rant gets passed along as fast as you know what.

I have been using TurboTax for as long as they have had the software. Never had any problem with either federal or state returns.
