Have not bought a Disc in 10 years. Have at 6. Mostly 16GB.

Is there a "life" to these?

What should I do?

God bless all you with photo knowledge!!

Do you mean memory cards? Disks are soft floppy round things in a case.

Memory cards do have a life, mine have all been long so far, over 10 years for some.
The life is variable for each card, but usually NOT short.

I have ten cards, I use them, I will continue to use them.
If and when one would fail, I'll replace it.
I'm not worrying.
(But then I'm just a retired Component (Integrated Circuit) Test Engineer for Incoming Quality Assurance.)

Disk? Like a CD? CDs used as data are about 700MB, not 16GB. DVDs, only a slightly better use of 'data disk' is about 4.7 GB.

Or, do you mean an SD / CF card for a camera? As capacity constantly moves forward, you'll be challenged to find even 32GB cards as 64GB is the current standard.

For use life, I've never had one fail in 15-years of shooting. But, the oldest in the 2GB and 4GB size are worthless for both capacity and read / write speed for the cameras I know own.

Interesting. I know no one who calls a CD a disk (Even though that's the shape). CD (DVD) is used to differentiate between floppy disks and compact disks. But then again, people not in the business started referring to memory as 50 megs and 16 gigs, now that's all over the place. The "s" is superfluous.

I had that problem with the memory size. My one camera can't use anything larger than 16Gb (SD), the other 8Gb (Memory Stick). So I bought a few of the smaller ones for each camera when I found them. I don't know if a 32 or 64 will work, just not being able to access anything over 16, or if they will not work at all because of any addressing scheme differences.

CD is called Compact Disc so it's not disk.

My original post was to inquire about the life and quality of camera cards.

Not to get "bogged down" in ID!!!

Pls how long should I use a card? How fragile are cards? Are you getting this drift?

Thanks

I don't recall ever having a memory card fail. I started with very low capacity cards, and as the capacity increased, I stopped using them or gave them away. Now I use 32 and 64 GB.

I use them until they die, I don't treat them with kid gloves.
I DO make sure I'm not statically charged before touching them though.
But do what you feel comfortable with doing.

Major brand Flash cards are very reliable. But, in the past 20 years I have had a couple of cards fail. They were Sandisk brand and replaced after a short phonecall. (Lifetime warranty). If the relatively small size of your card is ok for your use, you should be fine. But one warning. Cards should not be used for long term storage of any data. Always back up to another media such as storage on a computer
