Why is street photography almost always black and white?

Beg to differ: It isn't.

Maybe it is just me but it would be hard for a photographer to control the color of a scene and would end up with a photo with the eyes bouncing around all over it. With B&W the colors don’t distract you and you concentrate on the subject more. And of course I could be all wrong and it just got to be a tradition at least here on UHH! And like others say, it isn’t always!!!

I do like the B/W, but have asked the question several times as to why it is almost exclusively done in very high contrast. I have no problem with that either just curious as to what the connection is.

Roots ... the roots of street photography go back to a time where almost all photographs were in black & white not color.

Rules ... contrary to popular opinion, rules are not made to be broken. They are made to categorize and sort for an organization of items.

We here, at times, when given a choice have sometimes chosen color over black and white. As more and more photographers use color to their advantage the rule will slowly change ... Joshua Jackson comes to mind.

At the bottom of this thread there is an ad for Germ Attack at 44.95 a gallon. The hoarders have found us.

OK with roots for B&W, but why usually with high contrast?

Again, for the most part, roots. Early film was contrasty.

Not all posted here is of high contrast. I don't usually go that route with my postings.
