It was cool today - about 40 F - but I took a walk today with my K-30. Took photos of a squirrel, a robin, a bunch of businesses trying to stay in business, and several normal-looking outdoor signs.

So...up here Canada we are not as yet in total LOCKDOWN, but most folks are staying home, working from home, and many businesses have closed down, at least for the next two to three weeks- until further notice. I close the studio after finishing a few last-minute jobs- not much doing in the commercial sector and I can do a bit of editing and paperwork form home.

My wife and I decided to make the best of the situation and do some of that cleaning up and sorting out jobs that we were procrastinating on. I finally tackled my INFAMOUS junk drawer- that's the stuff my lovely wife wants to throw out, recycle or donate but I insist on keeping for "props", nostalgia or "collectors value. I decided to combine this with a little photographic project and make some creative images with my props/junk! I didn't bring any gear home so I made a soft-box out of the lamp above our dining room table- used some white cloth as a scrim and made a reflector out of some foil-clad packing material.

Since the subject is LOCKDOWN- I shot some locks! The old Disc-Man CD player looks like a flying saucer- well not really? The cheap headphones have an interesting shape, the discarded DCs were fun, and the old oil lamp is a favorite. I took the grills off all the stereo speakers and dusted (ugh!), the hot-sauce that can melt its container will probably kill the virus. On the way to throwing out the garbage, I thought the gas meters would make a nice graphic- surely a sign of my going stir-crazy! To top the day off, despite the "shelter in place" thing, the guys doing an excavation right under our bedroom window were back at it and spread dust and fumes all over the neighborhood- so much for cleaning! Well- it made for a nice aerial view.

After 50 years of running a photography business together, my wife and I agreed on a policy of no cameras and lights all over the HOUSE! So...laugh if you like but all the attached shots were made with a light bulb and my handy Samsung S-9 and a bunch of wonky Android apps!

Tomorrow is "cat portrait day"...I'll have to inform the cat!

More junk and mess!

By the way folks- I don't mean to make fun of the present pandemic- so please excuse my dark sense of humor. I realize we are all facing a significant challenge and having to cope with a monumental disruption of normality. There are folks experiencing financial loss, illness, and unthinkable tragedy. I can only hope that our interest in photography will serve as a small distraction while we wait out the passing of the virus and that we all recover and emerge unscathed and healthy.

Sincerely, Ed

I'm doing a lot of work in my yard, so I will be photographing my flowers, as well as the birds that come to our feeders. We are on the outskirts of Pensacola, FL, and my husband and I have been put on lockdown by the kids.
