Saw one of his news conferences yesterday and a guy was standing in the isle holding one camera and had two more on straps with the big white lenses. As soon as Trump walked in he just held the button down and I’m sure it was a 1DX 2 or 3 as it sounded like a machine gun. All the while Trump was talking he held the button Down. I can’t imagine how many thousands and thousands of phots he took. It would take me weeks just to get them into Lightroom not counting even reviewing them all. Seems crazy to me but I don’t know much.
He's giving the editor or client every possible expression Trump makes. Editors want to be able to portray public figures with every possible nuance.

That makes since, just hope they have a super computer that uploads fast. If I take 300 I just leave for a good while so they can upload and I have fiber optic internet.
So his editor can pick "just the perfect" image. And it makes him look like he is working hard.
In addition he might get something going on that no one expects. I forget which site it was but one site kept putting up stills of the president with someone's finger/hand positioned so it was looking like they were going to poke him in the ear, eye etc.
And that's how people with screwy expressions get on Facebook with screwy captions.

Another example of what good portrait photography is all about. Carefully plan your shot so that you capture the image just the way you pre-visualized it.....😠
The editorial term is "FILE PHOTO"! Publication and TV broadcast news services collect copious quantities of photos of all public figures, celebrities, entertainment folks, etc. These include the full range of expressions- happy, sad, disgusted, angry, shifty, mean-spritted, smart, stupid, clumsy, graceful, victorious, disappointed, disingenuous,...it's endless. These images are published in breaking news stories if actual picture are not available, in OPEDS, obituaries. sometimes slanted editorials, usually to visually drive home the point of view in the copy. Sometimes the are credited to a photographer, a picture service like Getty Images or a news wire service such as AP. UPI, Reuters, Canadian Press, etc. Sometimes the credits appear in microscopic fonts "file photo". Some consider it part of "yellow journalism" or unethical. Keeps the Paparazzi busy!

By coincidence I watched a video only a few days ago. It was put out by the National Geographic Society in 2010 and titled "The President's Photographer"."Fifty years inside the oval office".
If one wants a complete answer to why so many photos this will be worthwhile, and a bonus to Canon. Almost all the cameras shown are Canons.

Maybe he's got no video capability on his camera and is going to make a movie from them
There's a whole lot of dart boards out there...

As many as he took he sure could do a long movie.
One possible answer is that he wants to catch anything that would possibly happen.
I'm not trying to get political however can you imagine if someone had a camera doing this type of thing when Kennedy was assassinated or when Reagan was shot.
While I am not exactly a proponent of spray and pray there are times when it's a good thing.

In this instance the photographer could not plan the shot - he did not even know what shot he needed.

If a photographer had been standing there he might have took the bullet.

None whatsoever. But creative directors for the sites that will pay for and use them are amazingly critical. You may see 500 shots from a collection of 3000 that are good, but the creative director will see just 1 or 2 "perfect" shots.
About that "weeks to get them into Lightroom" are you just exaggerating for dramatic effect or does it really take you that long to add images to a catalog? I've done events when I've come back with as many as 2500 shots (a wedding with a couple of second shooters) - and been able to add them to Lightroom, review and cull, and add some simple adjustments to provide a uniform "look" to the set, exported to nominal-sized jpegs, and posted them onto my website for client review in a matter of a few hours. If I get back from an event early enough I get this done before I turn in for the evening. No exaggeration! It helps to have a 200Mbps or faster connection for uploading.
