due to shoot nieces wedding and facing some real locale challeges that will be brand new to me and would really appreciate all the help you can offer. Here's the challenge... 4pm wedding on Virginia Beach. I've prepared for caring for both my primary and secondary cameras with rain sleeves and even bought an extra lens cleaning kit at the camera shop yesterday. Also plan on having plenty of soft cloths for nightly cleaning.
I plan on using my 85mm/f1.8 lens as primary with protective UV filter and lens hood. If sunny, I'm thinking I'll probably have to underexposose about 2 stops.
Am I on track here or should I re-think a few things?
Thanking you all in advance for direction and recommendations!!

Outdoors, 4 pm, Virginia Beach, hmmm...

Two things:
1. Forget the 2 stops underexposure...find a light meter and get an incident reading. With white wedding dress and black tuxes, it's the only way to get a good reading.
2. Fill flash...at 4 pm you're going to have harsh shadows (unless it's overcast out). At the least use a white card to bounce the flash and soften it a bit or get an inexpensive diffuser.

My 2 cents.

Good luck.......you'll need it.

A wedding in this environment is the perfect argument for an incident light meter. Unclebe1 is 100% correct. It will save your bacon! Just guessing that a 2-stop underexposure is correct is no way to shoot something this important. Probably an overexposure anyway - but why guess?

Fill flash shot through a smallish softbox would be ideal. You are taking an assistant aren't you? Winds at the shore can be problematic.

The Sekonic 358. There are other good ones, but that is one with which I am familiar.

What is a incident light meter. I have a light meter from way back, is there a difference?

Hi Dave,

In addition to the information already received for weddings I suggest having (and following) a "shot-list" so you don't miss Aunt Mable or Uncle Harry who are important to the couple but you may not know well. When I was shooting weddings I always tried to get a family member who was not part of the actual wedding party to act as my guide on who needed to be shot (with a camera!). I notice the wedding is for your niece which may or may not require a guide based on how close you are to her (and the groom). Good luck and let us know how things go.

Different subject: Good looking rainbow in your avitar. What river is it? Take care & ...

Bring an assistant!!! Better yet a second shooter/assistant.
Someone to help lug gear,Hold reflectors, check off shots, gather and herd,ect...Check every shot as you go and put your histogram on your image review so you can watch your exposure.Good Luck on your 1st time out...Welcome to the Jungle!!

I just started using a Whibal card for white balance. When I get home, I'll have about 1,200 shots to go through, so I'm looking forward to using the card. I shot in raw and JPG, so I can play around with both.

My goodness, Al and Gretchen Beatty!!! Who'd a thunk it!!
What a deal...getting great photo advice from 2 of the top fly fishers in the country. I am honored. One of the first things I did was get a "must shoot" list and a 2 day "time line" from the bride and arranged a practice day with them and asked her to assign a couple of family members to help keep everyone "corraled" for group shots.

The beautiful rainbow was caught on the Little Red River in central Arkansas...hope to get back up there in November when the browns like to come out and play!
thanks again for the great advice!! Hope to hear fromyou again

Many thanks to all!!! Hope I can return the favor or "pay it forward" to other shooters.

Jerry, I saw an earlier post on the whibal card and bookmarked their web site...this may be the right time to order one
