Northern Shovelers should be easy to identify for new birders. Just look at their unique bills. I have found they can be identified even at a distance by their head and bill profiles. Not one of my favorite ducks because there are just so many of them here in the winter, but in photos, they are nice-looking, I think.
One interesting thing about Shovelers is their head color varies between purple-blue and green depending on the direction they are swimming or really, where the sun is coming from.
They are colorful and not as shy as many other ducks. Nice set, Katy.
I've shot a few of those. I didn't know that about the color of their heads changing that you so aptly demonstrated.
They are somewhat uncommon in these parts. Good collection of images. vz

I'll assume you meant with your camera and not ask further! Thanks for looking.

Thanks, Erik. They are so common here I usually don't even look at them unless they are close up. They are much nicer as seen by the camera though. As are most birds.

Thanks for looking, angler!
I agree with all your comments, Katy, and I like your shots. I discovered Shovelers a couple of years ago and now I always recognize them.

Hi, Katydid,
New York City's Central Park reservoir is currently a gathering place for Northern Shovelers. Here are close-ups of a few such visitors.
