Another, really good photograph. Nicely done, Timmers. Additionally, the photograph speaks for itself.

Young women from the local community collage would 'test' for the figure program. The figure photography paid more than general modeling and the portrait classes. It actual bothered me that the figure work paid more than the clothed work did. So I did away with the difference in payment and raised the non-figure pay to the same as the figure work. It was up to the individual what they wanted to do. There were more opportunities for clothed work than figure and they were told this, but they needed to test for the figure work because it didn't work if they decided that they did not care to as the class began.

The 'test' was to do a figure session, then take the results to another woman they trusted to talk it over with that preferably older woman that they trusted. The 'model' took all the images (negatives, contact sheets and a print or two) with her after I processed them. Then if they decided they wanted to join the classes as a model they would bring back the images.

They would return the contact sheets, marked as to the ones they wanted prints from. They were even surprised when they received the first model payment for their test session. I learned a lot about women from these interactions. One item is that they liked being naughty, but not treated or inferred that this was anything but kool!

Women absolutely love fantasy and playing at rolls with dress up. They delight in shoes more than any thing else,. being given the shoes they modeled in made their day. Clothing was fun, but it was the shoes that was the bench marker.

The single biggest education given to me was a collective thing. Women have a net work that men know nothing about. Women talk to other women about this issue. As it turns out I have developed a reputation, one of trust but also as a male who liked being with women, especially out of their clothes! Quite a reputation to have, because I make them feel sexy.

did you take more than just the test shot? or am I mixing up the story and the "portrait?"

I'm probably not communicating as well as I should, it's my fault.

In a 'test' shoot I would shoot with Leica R (R for reflex, a single lens reflex) and run a few rolls with the Hasselblad (21/4), almost all ways B&W. If the model was interesting (intellect, interest in the figure work) I would roll over the 4X5 or 8X10.*

I learned when shooting in Houston downtown on Sunday mornings (it was always deserted on Sunday AM), that an 8X10 camera got every ones attention and mountains of respect (I was a REAL photographer).

So in the lighting studio I would leave the 4X5 and 8X10 cameras on studio stands rolled to one side. The women would see them and be rather impressed by the shear size and stunned if I used one to make images. I of course used the ol' ploy from UT (University of Texas, Austin) "Impress them with words, but baffle them with bullshit!"

That's correct, roll a stand with an 8X10 on it, slide under a dark cloth then bring them around and drape the black cloth over their torso, then I would go stand where they were as they viewed me standing there, but clown around by saying, "Oppsie, I'm a little taller than you!" and I would slide down two feet so they could see me, it brought out mirth from most.

Always get the model involved with the camera, even the lights. They want to sense the entire event, after they incorporate all this in their personal narrative and later fantasy. To work with models well you have to have them comfortable with all that is being done. I have had models come visit and I would have lunch with them then take them into the darkroom and show them that entire part of the photographic experience. Some would get so hooked on the photo thing that I would hand them a 35mm camera during a class session and wear shoes they would join the students shooting images, then show the other models how they wanted them to pose and end up back in with other models posing again (sans the camera). I would even have them choose a model friend and have them do their own private shoot, but I would pay their model from the modeling fund of the school (they were always tickled when I told them that the model always gets paid, they though I was a crazy person, but I could tell they liked the rules).

*A great friend who did high end commercial work would 'burrow' my Hassie and the studio stand with the large 8X10 wooden camera, never used them, just eye candy for his clients (new York/Cali).

Sorry, I disagree with your opinion.
No, I don't enjoy back handed complements, it's insulting.
It would be best in future if you just lurked, looked and kept your comments and opinions to your self, they are not appreciated.
So I will just go back to ignoring you and what you post as I regard your comments as trollish.

Just like the other guy, you have it all incorrect.
Your opinions are not appreciated as they are back handed. Stop trolling my work.
Just look and keep the peanut gallery comments to your self.
I wish I could edit out these sorts of narrow myopic and absurdly delusional poor references to my work. Sorry if your offended but you have no grasp of what you re looking at, vary sad (to quote the Donald of our day).

And here we go. Timmers gets his shorts in a bunch due to some honest assessments of a really good photograph when compared to the amateurish snapshots you mostly post here. Some of us would like to be able to edit that tripe out of this section, as well.

My initial comment to this post loosely referred to the diatribe you usually post along with the photograph when I stated that the photograph speaks for itself. I interpret that diatribe as trying to justify your incredible insight into your artistic endeavors. However, that didn't last long. I guess we're all out of step and you're the only one who hears the band and is in step. Or, perhaps, you could get a clue.
