I guess you probably could rig something to use the strap mounts. But why? I have a black rapid also, love it, and use the tripod mount on the bottom of the camera as it was designed to do.

I have used a Black Rapid sling strap on 3-4 cameras over the years. My current Canon 90D uses a Black Rapid Arca Swiss plate always mounted on the battery grip with a Black Rapid connector that folds into the plate when not being used, making the camera tripod mountable very easily.

I have no worries about using the tripod socket with my Black Rapid strap.

If you worry you can buy additional cables/straps to act as a safety strap in case the carabiner disconnects or the tripod mount disconnects. See accessory here: https://www.blackrapid.com/camera-safety-tether/ Or make your own. https://www.amazon.com/Camera-Tether-Cameras-Altura-Photo/dp/B0751HM4XG/ref=pd_sbs_421_5/141-4451537-2898115?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B0751HM4XG&pd_rd_r=4eb3ff84-306c-4d85-af0c-33fdf97ef872&pd_rd_w=NJN2j&pd_rd_wg=kLnfJ&pf_rd_p=7cd8f929-4345-4bf2-a554-7d7588b3dd5f&pf_rd_r=9QTV5EKASZ4WH7P3QCMQ&psc=1&refRID=9QTV5EKASZ4WH7P3QCMQ

Connecting the camera to the strap by the lugs changes how it hangs, making it more difficult to swing up, at least for me.

I tried an Op-tech strap that connects by the lugs, and did not care for it at all after using a Black Rapid.

There are 2 system types basically. One like the Black Rapids are designed to use the tripod 1/4-20 socket, the other like OpTech uses the camera strap lugs.

People like the system they like, so trying to jury rig one to adapt to the other takes more effort than just using the correct system for you. I like the OpTech straps, slings, double slings and accessories to mix and match how it all works for me. Inexpensive and made in the USA.

Like Dngallagher, I've been using Black Rapid products for quite a while - 10 yrs. I have never had an issue with using the tripod socket. But with my longer lenses I use the tripod collar's socket.

Yes indeed, longer/heavier lenses safer that way, and they balance better keeping the camera in the right position for sure!

I use both OpTech and Black Rapid - depending on which lens and type of shoot. If using a walk around or portrait lens on the Z6 or D500 the OpTech seems much easier to use (with the Black Rapid 1/4 lug seems harder to handle). For wildlife with the Nikon 70-200 or Tamron G2 150-600 definitely the Black Rapid and with the tripod socket. With the Tamron I will use both the Camera and Tripod sockets.

Like Dngallagher and Gene51, I also use the BlackRapid strap and connect to the tripod socket on either the camera or the lens tripod mount. I did make a short safety strap the connects to the lugs on the camera when carrying the camera for long walks. This safety strap is attached by a mini carabiner but I have never experienced a mishap that the safety strap was needed.

The tripod mount was designed to hold a camera in a stable position not to be bounced around on someones hip.

I use BR straps with the Really Right Stuff plate on my camera bodies. I put the RRS military grade quick release fitting that plugs into RRS plate. It’s about $12-15 for the QR. RRS also has a strap that they sell for it but I already had several BR straps I use.

I also add an OpTech clip as a secondary or extra safety attachment. It’s optional but I usually clip both. Prior to always having the RRS plate on the camera I used the BR tripod mount that folds over without issues. If anyone would like to see a photo of this arrangement I’ll post one.

FWIW: I found that an Optech type strap held the camera in an awkward position that made it hard to grab quickly and easily where a Black Rapid type held the camera upside down with the grip pointed towards the front, making it easy to grab and slide up for use in one motion.

And there it is! Someone always brings this up. That is true but if there is something wrong with using the tripod mount for a sling strap why exactly can you purchase a blackrapid Nikon branded strap directly from the Nikon website? Do the people at Nikon not know that the tripod mount is not supposed to be used that way?
