What Determines Over Saturation?

What determines over saturation? Isn't it okay for a photographer to choose his/her own style? For the life of me I am perplexed at the comments I get of my shots being over saturated. On my monitor I see normal color gradients in my photos. It seems no matter what I post on UHH, I get an overdose of comments that my shots are being over saturated. I would hope that people viewing my shots would comment more on my composition than my choice of color. I have asked for that before. I wonder if my critics will say this shot is over saturated also?

I think the decision is yours to make. Personally, the overall shot looks good to me but the red of the kayak and the blue bleeds into the surrounding area so I would say those 2 aspects are over-saturated. Overall, i think it looks good

I guess I'll just give up on asking.

My eye tells me that this is a very interesting well composed & taken photo
My monitor displays realistic appearing colors -- What I would actually expect to see if I was there

Great action packed Shot !!!!

Hope the "Crazy Kayaker" makes it

PS: "IF" I thought the photo was suffering from "Over Saturation" I would mention it

Richard, with the lack of a variety of colors in this photograph it'd be very difficult to assess whether or not it was oversaturated. Sports items, such as this kayak, possibly are this shade of red. Your other posts, with regard to this topic, definitely lean towards that oversaturated look.

I would suggest that you check your monitor's calibration. That might help this issue and discussion.

You ask "Isn't it okay for a photographer to choose his/her own style?" Of course it is. But it's also OK for the viewer to decide what he/she likes and, when requested, express their opinions on images they see on UHH.

I personally don't like overly saturated images. I find them an assault on my eyes at times when I may be looking for calm. But I don't think the image you show here is "overcooked". The bright red is an essential part of the appeal of this picture!

Nice shot Richard. If it pleases you , that's all that matters and most criticisms are to be expected in a public forum . It's what occurs when a lot of eyes interpret stuff for personal preferences and unless the comments get personal rather than objective, it's expected. If you post it....they'll roast it.

Again , Welcome Aboard and enjoy the ride......it's good to have a camera and a new day....always.

Thanks Bob! I have not only checked my monitor's calibration, I last calibrated it a week ago. But thanks for the feedback, it's more of the same.

I looked at some of your other shots. The one posted above is not bad. Others do tend toward a sureal look. Many definitely lack a natural look. But, if that is what you want, that is up to you. I can see where some of them might blowup to interesting poster size wall hangings. However, if you were going for a calming slice of real nature look with the majority of them, then they are over-saturated.

It's your photograph, if anyone has a problem with it, it's their problem.
