Cable converter exist?

I have a wired remote for Nikon d300. The camera end of the cable is round with several pins in it. Newer cameras use mini or micro usb type recepticles. Is there a cable or connector that will adapt the Nikon end to a usb end to allow the remote to work?

Or are the remotes specific to the camera internally also ( ie won’t work on a different camera than Initially designed for).

Thanks

I think they are specific to the camera, although some remote cables will work on more than one model Nikon. They are not expensive, but can be a nuisance to keep up with if you need more than one model cable. You can find them on Ebay for around $10.00. More if you get a cable with sophisticated controls, such as digital readout, etc.

I bought an intervalometer (remote) for my Canon T6 only to discover that different Canon cameras use different remote plugs. I expect the same issues exist for other brands. Fortunately, they are cheap.

The wired remote you have, does it also come in a model that will plug into your D300? If so, you can probably just order the cable for that version of the remote. I ran into the same issue with Canon for a lightning trigger I had bought before upgrading to a newer Canon with a different plug. I just went to B&H, looked up the trigger, found the version for the newer Canon and ordered the cable. The only difference in the lightning trigger's versions is the cable. I would bet that the same is true of your remote.
Edit:I forgot. I have a Vello remote trigger that I also had to change the cable, so, you should have no problem. I believe that most all remotes have interchangeable cables.

Cable is fixed and can’t be changed. This need for adapter

That you might have a problem finding. If what you have is just the basic, inexpensive wired remote you may be better off just getting a new one. I also use wired remotes at times and I ended up with both the multi-pin and single plug types for my Canons.

I'm sure there is. There are sooo many adapters for all sorts of cables and/or usb connections, its unreal. It just takes time to look 'em all up!

"better off just getting a new one"

Seems to be the answer

There is a adapter (from the usb type) to the 10 pin type but I've not seen it advertised for general use - only for specific products (wireless units). Its not cheap either. Might work but I strongly suspect that the simpler one might be cheaper.

With D300 you probably have Nikon MC-30A Remote Trigger Release ($65) or MC-36A Multi-Function Remote (release, timer, intervalometer, $160), both of which use Nikon's round 10-pin connector and are typically compatible with the more pro-oriented camera models. The 10-pin connector is referred to as the "N1" type. According to B&H Photo, these are compatible with: D5, D4S, D4, D3S, D3X, D3, D850, D810A, D810, D800E, D800, D700, D500, D300S, D200.

Nikon also offers an MC-DC2 Remote Release ($27) with the USB style connector, mostly used with more consumer-oriented and compact camera models. This type of connector is called the "N3" type. According to B&H Photo: Z6, Z7, D90, D3100, D3200, D3300, D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300, D5500, D5600, D7000, D7100, D7200, D7500, D600, D610, D750, Df, D90 and COOLPIX P7700, COOLPIX P7800, COOLPIX A, COOLPIX P1000.

They are not interchangeable and there doesn't appear to be any sort of adapter to allow either to be used with incompatible cameras.

There are cheaper third party clones of the Nikon releases. I even found some on Amazon that had interchangeable connectors or cords allowing them to be used as either N1 and N3 type. However, the connectors with these *do not* convert from one type to the other. You basically swap out the entire cable for the correct type, as provided, to be able to use the third party release/timer/intervalometer on the different types of cameras (some of these not only have the two types of Nikon connectors, they also have the two type that Canon uses... and some even have Sony or other connector cables). I have no idea about the quality or functionality of these products.

I have a Canon intervalometer that I got on my first model EOS-20D back in 2006 (the 3 pin TC-80N3). That worked for the 40D and the 7D but the 80D has changed to a simpler pin but with a little searching I found a cable that fits the intervalometer and the new port on the 80D. Here it is on Amazon (less than $8 which was better than buying a new intervalometer). I would assume the same thing is made for Nikon as well.

That what I was hoping for but can’t find one. Cable is not that much cheaper than the intervalomter so new one may be in order
