Always "Reformat" your memory card in your camera. There is a specific reason for doing it that way, basically I think it has something to do with keeping it in Sinc with the specific camera model you are using. Ask a expert for the correct explanation.
All of the above..........

By clean, I assume you mean to delete from the card......it is best practice to format in camera, after verifying they are on your working drive and backup drive
The light bulb went on!!
Forgot about Format on camera.
Thanks UHH guys!!

Open the card in whatever file explorer your operating system has, select all and press that beautiful 'delete' key.

Nope. That can mess up the directory.. Always delete from camera.

No way. Do your research. Best practice is to format in camera.
I'm old-------
Deleting from camera means after photos have been imported to PC photos are then deleted?
that is, while card is still in PC?

Yes it can, and so can power surges, bad camera firmware, etc... But statements that throw around "always do this" simply aren't accurate.
Unless you try to format the card to some crazy file type that the camera doesn't understand, simply deleting the contents in most modern cameras will not mess up the directory.
We had this discussion a few months ago and tested in several cameras and determined that the formatting operation in those cameras does not create a directory structure, it's the firmware that does it after the formatting is complete
https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/tpr?p=10824031&t=626155So you can just delete the photos themselves, and the directory structure will remain intact. Or, at least in Canon and the Nikon cameras we tested this on, you can simply delete all contents of the card, and the camera will create the required directory structure and no reformatting is required.

That's what I do since I use Windows Explorer to transfer the files.
