Compressed files

Out of ignorance I compressed some files using a Microsoft program so I could email them to some people. I thought the email program would decompress them on the other end but it didn't and the pictures came out like 2 x 4 inches on their screen. Is there some way I can decompress these file pictures?

What program did you use to “compress” the files?

Exactly what did you do?

From MS Explorer I went to Windows Photo Viewer then to MS Office Picture Manager then selected Edit and then Compress Pictures.

No idea what you used...
Edit: never heard of it. I just zip the files.

Is the file you sent a .zip file?
Once received on the other end and viewed with Windows Explorer there is (should be) a right mouse click option to extract the files.

I use Windows 10 which carries these programs. I'm not too versed on Zip and people I send pictures too aren't either. So no zip. Thanks for your reply.

Don't they have to know how to extract whatever you send them?

Serious Jargon Error :-(

If the files were "compressed" in MS Office
Photo Manager they were not "compressed"
but were resized. If they were then saved
without any change of filename, the goose
is cooked.

No. Not that I am aware of. At least they have never mentioned it. I believe the pics just come up on their screen with the dialogue. I had shot the pics with my Nikon 7500 and the pics came out like 5 to 7 Mbs each so instead of using Dropbox I thought I'd try the compression function. Bad choice!

The program also has a "resizing" function. I have used that before without a problem. I did cook the goose and it didn't taste well! The pics were closeups of a Robin in a tree right outside my bedroom window and came out beautifully.....darn!

If you transferred the photos (files) to your computer before you worked on them, do you still have the originals on the card in the camera? If you edited them in the camera or on the card out of the camera, don't do that again. If the card has already been reformatted, The originals are gone. Personally, I make 2 copies of my unedited pictures. I'm a bit paranoid.

I put the card into my computer and used "cut" and "paste" and then worked on them on the computer. My motto is if you are going to screw something up be sure to screw it up good! Thanks for your help. I won't do that again, that I can assure you!

Don't use the card again or reformat it until you try Recuva to see if you can recover the lost files from the card. Just Google it.

Have them send what they received back to you to see what they got.

I have used "https://wetransfer.com/" It works very well for large files. Its been awhile since I have used it but it might be a way for you to just send the files and skip the resizing.

Also, be sure to back things up, particularly before trying anything for the first time.
