Looks like a Lesser Scaup
Scaup, not shoveler or ring-necked.
Mike
Looks to be what is often called a Canvasback, here on the Chesapeake Bay. I am no expert, but would concede that the proper ID is most likely the larger of the Scaup ducks, as mentioned by other contributors.

I'm almost sorry I asked...

Bruce, definitely it is not a ringed neck duck. See the first picture. Some one had said that to identify the bird, he needs a close up of the duck. Here are two close up photos of the bird under discussion for the ID. Last Saturday, I took lot of pictures of the migratory bird including this one. I also wanted to know the ID. Bruce sorry for posting photos on your thread.

Lesser or Greater feelings on having asked?

Where on the bay, may I ask?
I am in Annapolis.
Do you remember when the Canvasbacks would winter in rafts that covered acres?
Off Tolly Point, in Bay Ridge was a sure bet to see 1000's.
Now their place has been filled by the Scaup.
Now, I have a copy of National Geographic Field Guide of Birds of NA.
I will send it to you if you would like. Send your address to me private and it will go out in a day or two.
Bill
You asked a perfectly legitimate question.
Never be sorry for that.
The sad part is that many seem to stab into thin air. Making an identification with no clue.
Confusing the Scaup is understandable, but confusing a Scaup with either a Shoveler or a Canvasback is a hoot.

Beautiful.
The first is a Ringnecked Duck, as stated by Mohammed. One of the 'Pochards', or diving ducks, as are Canvasback, Redhead, and Scaup ducks.
The next two are Lesser Scaup. The high, domed head plainly apparent.
Thank you for these, Mohammed.

Yes, very much so. Thus the length of this thread. Look close at head shape, feather pattern can be confusing, but the skull is distinctive.
Bill
I’m thinking lesser Scaup as well.
