I don’t use Nikon so am unfamiliar with that combo but if you’re focusing then zooming your lens may not keep the same focus while zooming.

When posting an image to show issues, you should check the “store original” check box which will allow closer inspection of the image as well as the EXIF data. It helps to get to the problem sometimes.

What works best for me is to use a good 65 thru 100mm prime lens for shooting baseball action and crop if necessary. I try to find a good place as close as possible to the playing field and wait for the action to happen - not move around thinking I'd get a better view.

The most common thing is user error rather than equipment failure, not saying you erred, but would be worth checking. Can you tell more about what focus method/settings you used and what you focused on and how you focused? I shoot canon but the usual things apply to all.

Just create a reply and add this example image, being sure to store the original. Let the details of the image answer the several questions being asked about the technical details.

My sense is that your zoom lens is changing focus as you tilt or move your camera.A lens band made out of silicone will help. Call B&H and they can fix you up with the correct band.

It can be numerous things:

Is the camera in AF-C (continuous) mode when you wanted AF-S (single)? (You may want AF-C for tracking the players as they move around).

Check AF-S Priority Selection and AF-C Priority Selection. I set mine to focus.

Since you shoot with Nikon, load Capture NX-D or View NX-i from Nikon's website. Turn on : "Show Focus Points". It will show where you focus point(s) landed.

On Canon, if you focus then hold to recompose, the focus point box displayed moves off the original focus point as you recompose. Same with Nikon? I ask because it can fool the OP into thinking the focus is somewhere it isn't. Different story if focus tracking is involved, of course.

Yes, I can see that it would not show the correct position of the focus points when recomposing
