We bought the mops and wringer buckets in Kolkata and took them to Sarenga Missionary hospital. Previously they only had worn out domestic mops and buckets, which, without the wringers didn't pick up much of the dirt, it just wet it and moved it around. Why didn't they buy the buckets themselves? When you realise the hospital is so short of funds that they cannot afford all of the drugs, dressings and medical equipment the need for new
mops become a low priority.
The Senior Nurse on the right is 84 years old and has served the hospital for her whole life. The hospital is her life, she will never retire from what she possessively calls "My hospital"

What a cool thing to do. The simple joys are so wonderful. Really nice image, Graham.
Namaste Such a nice gesture.
A clinical fetal doppler, an incubator, baby clothes and funds for cataract surgery are amongst the many things we help them with.

The difference between the haves and haves not. Well captured joy from a simple gift.
How close does the TV series ‘Good Karma Hospital’ come to reality Graham? I know it’s filmed in Sri Lanka but is set in India - and it too is underfunded.
Your photo tells it’s story well.
Great work you have done out there, must be very rewarding. What is your charity called?

Overall the TV series gives a good indication of the workings of a missionary hospital in India. But it is a rather glossy image and highly sanitized. In reality, the hospitals and the surroundings are, shall we say, much less attractive with litter and rubbish everywhere. Rundown shabby buildings abound, poverty is more obvious. The Good Karma depicts the beach holiday destination area of Southern India, such as Kerala and
Goa. West Bengal, where Sarenga lies, is in the agricultural lands between the edge of the teak forests and the more arid regions of the central Indian Plain.

Interesting Graham. Thanks for your assessment, it reminds me that my daughter described most of the parts she visited as full of litter, with people constantly sweeping it into the nearest water course. I’d still love to visit but it now seems unlikely.

There is plastic waste/ litter everywhere, the watercourses are full of plastic bottles. My daughter and her husband flew out to Kolkata last night, I'm disappointed not to be going with them, perhaps next year.

Parts of the hospital buildings are in such bad repair that they have had to abandon them.
