I sometimes use a Nikon D750 to take short video. The files are excellent quality, but they are MOV format. I tried to use Pinnacle for editing, but it doesn't recognize the MOV format. Is there any software that will convert these files? Or is there a different editing program I can get without mortgaging my house?

I use Wonder Filmora for video editing - It will open/read the .mov file and export in any number of common formats.

MOV is a standard format. All Macs read it, and better Windows apps do, too.

But I wouldn't ask about Windows Movie Maker if I knew he had a MAC...
He asked for a software recommendation.
List A for Windows, list B for Mac, I guess list C for Unix.

MOV is a standard. It is not proprietary.

I'm sure that Windows Movie Maker will edit and convert them. Microsoft retired it in 2012, but you can still get it here.

On the D7500 and Z50 you can shoot in either MOV or MP4. MOV was developed by Apple for MAC products but
works on windows as well. Don't know if the D750 has the option to shoot in MP4 but I would think it does.

Try this:

Or this:

You can download free trials for each and decide what works best for you.

Strange, but I have the same issue. I shot a few short videos recently. I don't even know what format the camera uses. My Win10 played about 1/2 of the first video, then said it didn't have a program to open it! A friend of mine gave me a name of a free program. I've downloaded it, but haven't used it yet.

video pad video editor will work. There is a free version which can be upgraded for a small fee.

A bit off the subject but I use my iPhone 10 to shoot short video clips to add variety in my photo shows. A lot more convenient than using my D7200.

Convert MOV files -
https://www.google.com/search?q=convert+mov+files&rlz=1C1SQJL_enUS889US889&oq=convert+mov+files&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l7.3623j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Movavi is listed. It's not free, but it can save any video that appears on your monitor.
