Hi! I am a newbie & an causal photographer (kid's activities, family get-togethers, travels, etc.). I joined less than a motnh ago & am immensely enjoying the discussions. Recently I purchased a Canon D80 with the 18-135 IS USM (3.5-5.6) & 70-300 IS II USM (4-5.6) - all used and nothing too fancy!

That was for some background. It seems to me there are a lot more discussions based on Nikon cameras than Canon. My question is, is that because people in the know prefer Nikon over Canon? I guess it the age-old question of Nikon vs Canon

Nothing is as cruel as the bad luck of using the wrong camera brand.

Welcome to UHH, and congratulations on you new Canon D80 and lens purchase. In almost 4 years that I have been on the Hog, I think that there are just as many camera questions regarding Canon as there are about Nikon cameras. Maybe in the short time you have been a member, there might have been more Nikon questions or posts, but I think it is pretty even between the two companies.

Canon vs. Nikon is a lot like Ford vs. Chevy, PC vs. Mac, Fender vs. Gibson. It's all personal preference and what works best for you.

That makes me feel better! I am still learning to get more out of my camera & myself. So far, I have mostly used the video capabilities of the Canon 80D (earlier I mis-typed it as D80) for taping my 14-YO daughter who is an aspiring actor, model & singer!

You probably should worry less about the trials and travails of the Nikon owners and focus on developing your skills with your own equipment. With the weather improving, determine how to enable BBF on your EOS body and practice moving your AF points / AF groups around the frame in preparation for the kid's sports. When you become one with your camera, the magic begins. Welcome aboard!

Nikon owners like to discuss their cameras where Canon users simply use them???

Canonites vs. Nikonians

Sort of like the Hatfields vs. the McCoys, only without the guns.

Believe me, one brand is as good as the another. I happen to shoot Nikon, not because i think they are the best but because my first decent camera happened to be a Nikon. Don't get caught up in the ridiculous argument, which brand is better.

Mine was a Canon. Like you, I just stuck with the brand.

They're all good. If they weren't, they would evaporate.

I have owned several brands of camera's, Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Hasselblad, & Leica, believe me it's the operator not the camera. Learn everything you can about the camera you have, they all have basically the same Features, the more you use it the more you will like it.

A. Welcome to the UHH
B. Maybe because the Nikon owners need more help?
C. The model is Canon 80D - not D80, I own one and a few others also. It is a good solid general purpose camera. The only drawback is the same as all other APS-C (crop sensor) cameras - you need a wider lens when doing wide angle landscape or building interior shots because of the 1.6x crop factor. That means that all lenses get the field of view of a lens of 1.6x the focal length on a Full Frame* camera, example=my 100 mm macro gives the angle of view of a 160 mm lens, now in some cases that is a good thing, like birds.

*In digital a camera with a sensor the size of a 35mm negative/slide is considered full frame. In film cameras that is a "small frame".
