Did you go to the Tamron site and download their compatibility chart and see if your camera is listed as retaining AutoFocus with this lens and converter configuration?

If it doesn't work on your camera, that's a pretty specific problem ...

I have this lens and love it. Shooting Nikon FX and DX. Frankly, i had never felt the need to use a TC with it, but your question had me diving into my gear inventory. I had trouble fitting a Nikon 1.4 III onto the lens, so I did not force it. I also had a Kenko N-AF 1.4x Teleplus Pro 300 which attached easily, and retained AF. Sorry, can’t report on IQ, but that combo works, at any rate.

So, you retained AF with the converter - but with which body ? - as which BODY will matter. .....

I just tried it on a D3400, a D500 and a D810 with similar results. There is AF, but it seems to hunt more than when using the lens without AF (due to the smaller aperture?).

As I was writing my last response, i was reminded that the Tamron is a variable aperture lens. My earlier quick tests were done with the lens not extended, and as I said, the AF seemed to function. However, with the lens extended to 400mm, the aperture jumped to f/9 on the D3400, and the focus was unacceptable. I don’t have time right now to test all of my bodies, but if your camera cannot focus at the smaller apertures, then I would say that this TC is not for you.

The AF of many cameras will slow down or not function past F8.

The tamron 1.4 is more expensive than the 100-400 lens so I dont want to buy it without some concrete recommendations..I have not had much luck with the image quality on Kenko extenders on other lenses .

The older/cheaper Tamron SP 1.4X is what I have used with great success on the Canon 70-200 f4 and Sigma 100-300 f4......(not Nikon tho) - https://www.ebay.com/itm/Tamron-SP-AF-1-4x-teleconverter-140F-FNs-Auto-Focus-Nikon-AFd-AF-S-extender-MINT/303501215996?hash=item46aa1508fc:g:WGQAAOSwiMteWEhq

I sure hope you're not thinking about paying $700+ for a teleconverter.

Not good with either the Kenko 1.4X or the Tamron SP 1.4X. You don't want to try to focus through a lens with a max aperture of F9. And you'll need to because cameras cannot focus when the max aperture is smaller than F8.

You'll be much happier if you get a Tamron 150-600 G2 than trying to get 560mm on a 100-400.
