What can I do to make the subject stand out more?
I don't want to lose the leading lines the rocks produce. Otherwise cropping would be a great answer.

That won’t hold up to more cropping. Even slightly enlarging it on a smart phone it’s not sharp enough. And assuming the cactus is the subject, it’s not in focus.

I see what you mean and understand what matters to you, But i still think all the pic needs is some selective cropping . It’s a very nice image other-wise, but the subject is not quite as DOMINANT as it should be? IMHO.RJM
Posted the wrong image. I have another one with the cactus infects. My mistake.

Crop, but keep the lines. Here is my stab (I just used the "snipping tool" - did not download, so might not be super sharp). Cactus is at the intersection of "rule of thirds" grid.
Cropped

Little dodge and burn to lessen the impact of the rocks....if that’s what you’re looking to do.
Thanks. That really makes a difference!

Crop so that the cactus is in the lower left third. You will still have a leading line on the right.

Take some off the bottom. You’ll still have your leading lines and good composition. As it is, the rocks are so strong that, IMHO, they hide your subject.

Perhaps increase contrast of the target area to make it stand out more.

Here is another thought. The suggestion for cropping is good and you can crop while keeping leading lines. I think all the color elements, such as the spots of lichens just overly competes with the (cholla?) cactus. To solve this I would consider B&W. B&W removes the confusion created by the color blotches and emphasizes just the tones and textures. You can highlight the leading lines further leading the viewers attention right to the cactus. I've attached a quick example, which is by no means a finished image. I also flipped the image horizontally because the eyes usually enter the image from the left and travel to the right. like reading a book.

Thanks Mike. You definitely improve my image. I really like the time you took enhancing the image.
