I have recently exchanged PMs with several UHH members regarding raptor photography at the SacramentoNWR. There is a tree on the Willows auto tour that is an "office" where large raptors begin thier work day most mornings. You may find a subject at the top of this tree at any time of day but mornings are the best. This pair are regulars. The larger bird is the female with the white feathers on her shoulder. There are at least two breeding pairs and several juvenile Bald Eagles and many hawks. If you approach slowly and stay in your vehicle you can fill you viewfinder with these beauties.

Thank you Stan, I appreciate your comment. The good news is there is probably a NWR much closer to home.

Thanks Linda! I hear so many complaints about the stay in your vehicle rule. The rule is for the benefit of the birds but once we learn to work with the concept of a moving blind the rule works very well for the benefit of photographers. The bottom line is if you open your door these guys are gone....and you risk a $270.00 fine! I appreciate your visit, hope all is well with you.

Those are fantastic, Phil. We always call it the "eagle tree". Unfortunately, we arrive in late morning or early afternoon and never see eagles there anymore, or hawks, for that matter. Several years ago, I got some good photos of an eagle and a raven fighting over that tree. The raven looked tiny compared to the eagle.

One of my favorite things is witnessing crows and ravens abusing eagles! What a joy it has been to see this eagle population in the northern Sacramento valley grow in recent years. Thanks for the visit Katy.

Thanks Carol. They are magnificent to watch and the longer you watch the more evidence you see of what magnificent thieves they are. I have seen several hawks lose thier prey to eagles this season. They even steal from each other...privilege's of the alpha predator! I appreciate your kind comment.
