Brick Lane, Shoreditch, London.

The image is somewhat soft but it is of interest because the pianist, Stephen Ridley, has had quite a successful career in the period since the picture was taken.

Done well for a boy from the East End, hasn't he?

The guy that runs the junk shop is a typical old irascible East Ender that doesn't like people taking photo's of his emporium, probably the reason the picture is soft, I wasn't welcome with my camera

The posture of the woman listening/viewing and the intensity of the piano player make this photo very special. And of course, your nearly out of frame rapid walker adds to the story; many would have cropped her out

The closest figures certainly aren't lacking for clarity or details, and the rest is too compelling to care about a wee bit of softness.

when an image tells such an intriguing and effective story, there is no need to apologize for "softness". I'd rather see this definitive moment of expression by all characters than see a wart somewhere.
I don't like confrontation and understand your "quickness" to avoid the proprietor. Good for you to get the shot! Its remarkable,

It's not a normal thing for me to avoid the "difficult" shot, in fact, I relish them, they make for some of the best pictures. A "difficult" situation can usually be overcome by your demeanour and words

Thanks, Linda, interesting content trumps technical deficiencies, well, that's my excuse!

People entering or leaving have become a sort of a signature of mine

This photo is interesting on so many levels. You have him making music on an old discarded piano. His expression can be taken two ways. Either he is into his music or he is trying to hear why a note if off key. The women stopping and leaning over to the little girl. Perhaps telling her if she practices she too can sound good one day. And last the women having no time to slow down and β€œsmell the roses.”
Edit after posting reading other responses, it appears they have a similar take on the image
