Just bought the lens and this is my first attempt at macro
Difficult to get the whole coin in focus
Top letters are sharp but lower are soft.
This was done hand held, guess a stand is in order to make a perfect shot.

Image plane is not parallel to the subject plane. They must be parallel for DOF to cover the subject in focus.

Yep, this I understand. This is why I said a stand is in order. Almost impossible to keep everything parallel by hand and the closer I get the hard it is to maintain it seems ...........

Also, are you shooting at F8 to F11? DOF starts getting narrow as one goes down to 1:1.
