Indeed!

To All:

Not trying to spread fear here, but the CDC just released to the press today a more aggressive action they will be taking to prevent the spread of COVID-19 here in the US. I suggest everyone take it seriously and take care of yourselves.

The following is the announcement verbatim:

Coronavirus COVID-19 represents "a tremendous public health threat" says CDC.
"We believe our aggressive travel precautions are working. The fact that we have been able to keep this number low [13 net cases, counting separately the 2 cases of people repatriated from Wuhan and the 18 cases of people returning from the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan] is good news, especially given what we're seeing amongst some countries in Asia that are beginning to experience community spread: this is when cases are detected in a community but it's not known what the source of the infection was. This is being reported in Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam, as well as Hong Kong and Japan."
"We are not seeing community spread here in the United States, yet. But it is very possible, even likely, that it may eventually happen."
"This new virus represents a tremendous public health threat. We don't yet have a vaccine for this novel virus nor do we have a medicine to treat it specifically."
"We are now taking, and will continue to take, unprecedented aggressive actions to reduce the impact of this virus."
"We are working with state local and territorial health departments to ready our public health workforce to respond to cases and the possibility that this outbreak could become pandemic." [1]

Not to discount the concern... that's certainly legitimate and I'm glad everyone is exercising an abundance of caution.

But, to put it in perspective...

To date worldwide there have been approx. 78,000 cases of COVID-19 diagnosed and 2249 confirmed deaths.

For comparison, during the 2018-19 season, in the U.S. alone the CDC estimates there were more than 35,500,000 cases of flu with upwards of 34,000 deaths. And that was one of the more moderate flu seasons over the last ten years. In 2017-18 flu was reported to have caused 61,000 deaths... and in the 2014-15 season it was credited for 51,000 deaths.

Again, these flu figures are only for the U.S., while the numbers for COVID-19 are worldwide.

Agree with all of the above.

However, I believe main reason for the big concern with COVID-19 is, experts still don't know a lot about it. Other reasons, no vaccine available as of yet and may take 18 months (2-5 years in normal process) to make it available to the public and no specific anti-viral treatment for this disease. Additional concern is, although WHO follows the incubation period as up to 14 days (reason for the 14 day-quarantine), one recent study although not peer-reviewed, states it could be up to 24 days. If this is true, a lot of people are being released from quarantine prematurely.

Another reason is, from legitimate reports indicate that some people infected with the virus may be spreading it before the symptoms occur i.e., before seeking medical attention and getting tested. Another reason is, from legitimate reports, some people are considered "super spreaders" that is, they are transmitting the virus to other people more than the average number. Comparing common flu and COVID-19, the flu is the rate of transmission to other people (called Ro or R-nought) is 1.3 whereas COVID-19 is between 1.5 to 3.5. To explain, with flu, 1 infected person will spread it to 1.3 people while COVID-19, 1 infected person will spread it to between 1.5 to 3.5more people. If you do the math, you will see the big difference. To make matters worse, how many "super spreaders" are out there? For them, the suggested Ro for COVID-19 does not apply and it could be "the sky is the limit." In the video I posted, check out slide # 13 for the diagram as to the Ro of COVID-19.

Here's one more thing about COVID-19 (and applies with flu, as well) - the older you are the higher risk of dying from it. Also, the more pre-existing conditions especially heart disease, diabetes, and chronic respiratory, the higher the risk of dying from it. See slide # 19 for details.

For Flu and COVID-19 - CDC suggests same recommendations to avoid catching them or spreading. For example, washing hands with soap water for at least 20 seconds, cover mouth when coughing and sneezing, etc. See slides # 16 and 17.

Update: Looks like Italy is getting hit hard by COVID-19 - 55 cases with 2 deaths. Highest in Europe. They have now declared it an emergency. South Korea is becoming the next hotbed for COVID after China - 433 cases and counting. They believe the sudden rise in cases was due to some one who is considered as a "super spreader," who attended a religious assembly along with 1000 others. In past 4 days has more than five-fold increase. Iran is also beginning to feel it. 28 cases with 5 deaths. The mysterious part is, none of the cases had any contact with China or from someone recently been to China. Egypt, Israel, and Lebanon reported their first cases.

The worst part is, nobody believes the numbers coming out of China. They keep changing the criteria for for how to count the cases. Common belief is, it is grossly underestimate. The following may be the real count: In a study published in Lancet in January based on modelling study, as Jan. 25, 2020, their study suggests that there were already 75,000 infected cases in China and that the number doubles every 6.4 days. If this modelling is to be believed and if the virus couldn't be contained, by now there should be 1.2 million infected cases.

Secrecy and suppression on part of China contributed to the worldwide outbreak of the virus. A couple days before China locked down Wuhan, 3rd week of January, 5 million people left Wuhan. A week earlier, when the infection was already known to be spreading, 40,000 families shared food and other delicacies in a festival held in Wuhan, the epicenter. The first case of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was reported in Wuhan was on December 7 or 8, about 6 weeks before Wuhan was locked down. Wuhan is a city with 11 million people in a country with 1.2 billion people. It is estimated that 200,000 people travel in and out of China everyday before the travel advisories posted. Chinese people are the number 1 tourists out of country estimated about 140 million a year (2018). They travel mostly to neighboring countries - Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, South Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, US, Canada, Europe, etc.

Here's the sad part: the doctor who reported the first cases of coronavirus with unusual symptoms in Wuhan was arrested for spreading rumors and making false statements and forced to sign a statement that the virus can only be transmitted from animals and not human-to-human. Seven other doctors were arrested for same reason. Eventually, the doctor himself contracted the virus and died from it. His name, Dr. Li Wenliang, now a hero in China.

Take care.

Update on COVID-19 as of Feb. 22, 2020, 8:00 pm ET:

COVID-19 showing no sign of slowing down. Italy and So. Korea are getting rocked hard and so is Iran. Iraq reported its first case.

Regarding Incubation Period: One study indicates that COVID-19 incubation period may be as long as 27 days. Another one says, can be as long as 24 days. Another study says incubation period may be as long as 19 days. WHO and CDC have been following the 14-day incubation period. I hope they are right or else, some quarantined individuals may be being released prematurely. BTW, the word "quarantine" comes from the Italian word, "quarantina," which means "forty days."

The following are the findings on different studies regarding incubation period of COVID-19.
2-14 days represents the current official estimated range for the novel coronavirus COVID-19.

However, a case with an incubation period of 27 days has been reported by Hubei Province local government on Feb. 22 [12]

In addition, a case with an incubation period of 19 days was observed in a JAMA study of 5 cases published on Feb. 21. [13]

An outlier of a 24 days incubation period had been for the first time observed in a Feb. 9 study.[11] WHO said at the time that this could actually reflect a second exposure rather than a long incubation period, and that it wasn't going to change its recommendations.
Period can vary greatly among patients.

Mean incubation period observed:
3.0 days (0 - 24 days range, study based on 1,324 cases)
5.2 days (4.1 - 7.0 days range, based on 425 cases).

Mean incubation period observed in travelers from Wuhan:
6.4 days (range from 2.1 to 11.1 days).

Here are the numbers Infected Cases and Deaths from China (take it with a grain of salt):
No. of Infected cases: 76,935 (+647 past 24 hours)
No. of Deaths: 2,442 (+97 past 24 hours)
Serious/critical: 11,477

From South Korea:
No. of Infected cases: 556 (+123 past 24 hours); Deaths: 4 (+2 past 24 hours)

From Japan:
No. of Infected cases: 134 (+25 past 24 hours); Deaths: 1

From Iran:
No. of Infected cases: 29 (+11 past 24 hours); Deaths: 6 (+2 past 24 hours)

From USA:
No. of Infected cases: 35 (7 new cases in the United States from the Diamond Princess cruise ship, in addition to the 11 previously confirmed, for a total of 18 from the ship. 1 new case from Humboldt County in Northern CA. 1 new case in Sacramento, CA. 15 cases from earlier cases from different states) But, wait a minute. Did you say 35 cases? Check this out. The number doesn't seem to add up: https://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2020/02/22/costa-mesa-coronavirus/

From Italy:
No. of Infected cases: 79 (+58 past 24 hours; 18 in critical conditions in ICU); Deaths: 2 (+1 past 24 hours)

Italy now has - by far - the highest number of cases and deaths in Europe, accounting for over 60% of all European cases, and becoming the country with most cases among all western (non Asian) nations.

ITALY EMERGENCY MEASURES: 11 towns and areas affected by the outbreak have been placed in lockdown: "In areas considered hotspots, neither entry or exit will be authorised without special permission," Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said, adding that businesses and schools in the areas would be closed.

Update on COVID-19: Feb. 23, 2020 @ 8:30 pm ET

So. Korea, Italy, and Iran continue to get pounded by COVID-19. China counts still rising although the rate appear to be declining (if you believe China's numbers).

Here are the latest numbers as of as of 2/23/2020 8:30 pm ET:

Worldwide: Total infected cases - 79,163, Deaths - 2,471, Recovered - 23,596

China: Infected cases - 76,944, Deaths - 2,346
SOUTH KOREA: Infected cases - 763 (+327 new cases) Deaths - 7 (+5 new deaths)
ITALY: Infected cases - 157 (+78 new cases), Deaths - 3 (+1 new death)
Japan: Infected cases - 146 (12 new cases), Deaths - 1
Singapore: Infected cases - 89 (0 new case), Deaths - 0
Hong Kong: Infected cases - 74 (+4 new cases), Deaths - 2
IRAN: Infected cases - 43 (+14 new cases), Deaths - 8 (+2 new deaths)

US: Infected cases - 35 (0 new case), Deaths - 0 (although 1 American woman died in Wuhan)
There are supposed to be 35 infected cases in the US and yet, the government is trying to place "30-70" patients infected with the virus in Costa Mesa, CA. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdkNVTFGbVg and in Alabama - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSCVBYQe3ds

U.S. CORONAVIRUS CASES:

As of February 23, 2020 at 17:25 GMT, there have been 35 confirmed cases of patients infected with the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in the United States:
• 18 former passengers of the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan.
• 10 in California
• 2 in Illinois
• 1 in Wisconsin
• 1 in Arizona
• 1 in Washington state
• 1 in Massachusetts
• 1 in Texas

For more details: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

ITALY OUTBREAK:
• 11 towns, 50,000 people, placed in lockdown. People are banned from entering or leaving.
• At least 26 patients are in critical condition.
• Armed forces and police forces have been mobilized to form an insurmountable "health belt" around contagion areas. Roadblock violators risk up to a 3 months prison sentence.

- Schools closed in Lombardy, Veneto, and in Trentino Alto Adige regions.
- Universities closed in Piedmont and Emilia Romagna regions.
- Carnival in Venice and all sport and public events in Veneto cancelled.
- All public and private events, including sport, cultural, and religious events in Lombardy cancelled. Movie theaters closed.

Possible “super spreader” (someone is transmitting the disease and was negative or was negative when checked and now positive).

Some consequences of Italy's outbreak:
1) "Austria stops train from Italy due to suspected infections"
2) "Local authorities to close Venice Carnival early"
3) "Giorgio Armani shows collection behind closed doors"

SOUTH KOREA OUTBREAK:
• President Moon Jae-in raised the alert level to maximum (Level 4: Serious) thus empowering the government to lock down cities and restrict travel. Government can also forcibly prevent public activities and order the temporary closure of schools, though the government gave no immediate details on what steps could be taken.“The coming few days will be a critical time for us” he said in an emergency meeting.

• Last few days progression of total cases in South Korea:
o Feb. 23: 602 cases (day still in progress)
o Feb. 22: 436 cases
o Feb. 21: 209 cases
o Feb. 20: 111 cases
o Feb. 19: 58 cases
o Feb. 18: 31 cases

Some consequences of So. Korea's increasing # of infected cases:
1) "Coronavirus outbreak: Israel blocks arrivals from Seoul"
2) "200 Israeli students quarantined after contact with coronavirus-infected South Koreans"

IRAN OUTBREAK:

The WHO is very concerned about Iran. Official cases 43 (8 deaths) but unofficially, many cases and deaths. (Concern: Gross under-reporting of cases)

Unofficial report of very high proportion of more serious cases. ? A strain of the virus has mutated to become more virulent leading to high fatality rate

Northern Iran: Some unofficial reports of some people getting respiratory failure and viral myocarditis, both quite frightening.

One doctor died last week (worked for a full week in a hospital without any quarantine) infection caught in a small town.

In Tehran 13th District – the Mayor is infected but attended Friday Prayers with 10,000 people; sitting close together and observed the cultural kissing on the face and shaking hands (huge risk of cross infection).

Town of Qom is shut down but rest of the country open to travel.

Some consequences of the IRAN OUTBREAK:
1) "Iraq extends ban on Iran arrivals amid coronavirus fears"
2) "Afghanistan bans travel to and from Iran"
3) "Turkey to 'temporarily' close border with Iran"
4) "Jordan bars entry to citizens from China, Iran, South Korea"
5) "Turkey, Pakistan and Armenia have closed their borders with Iran"

Quote:

"The director general of the WHO has recently spoken of a narrowing of the window of opportunity to control the current epidemic. The tipping point - after which our ability to prevent a global pandemic ends - seems a lot closer after the past 24 hours."

Prof. Paul Hunter
Professor of Health Protection
University of East Anglia
Feb. 23, 2020

My own humble opinion, the window of opportunity been closed quite sometime ago. In fact, all windows have been shut closed and boarded up. The WHO is slow to react.

Take care.

COVID-19 UPDATE: Feb. 26, 2020 as of 8:00 pm ET

USA:
• Total infected cases – 60
• 3 new cases in the United States: 2 from the Diamond Princess cruise ship and 1 who had been repatriated from Hubei on Feb. 7 and was put on quarantine upon entering the United States at JBSA-Lackland base in Texas.
• BREAKING:
“Coronavirus uncontained: First case in U.S. from unknown source is from Bay Area” https://www.sfchronicle.com/health/article/Coronavirus-spreads-First-case-in-U-S-from-15087477.php A Solano County resident has tested positive for the new coronavirus but had not recently traveled to any foreign country where the virus is spreading and had not had contact with any people with confirmed cases, public health officials said Wednesday.

WORLDWIDE: Infected cases: 82,166; Deaths: 2,804; Recovered: 32,817
CHINA: Infected cases - 78,499 (+435); Deaths – 2,747 (+32) – may not be the actual numbers
SOUTH KOREA: Infected cases – 1,595 (+334); +1 death (total 12)
ITALY: Infected cases – 470 (+147); +1 death (total 12)
IRAN: Infected cases – 139 (+44); +3 deaths (total 19) – actual numbers most likely higher

For details: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

SOUTH KOREA:
• 1,595 (+334) cases; +1 death (total 12)
• 334 new cases in South Korea. The number of confirmed cases is expected to jump in the coming days as health authorities have started testing more than 210,000 members of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus in Daegu, attended by the 31st case (a possible "super spreader") and which accounts for more than half of the country's 1,595 total cases to date. https://en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN20200227003900320

THE ITALIAN CONNECTION:
Countries with first reported case(s) and new cases added to the total:

• Romania +1 (a person returned from Italy)
• North Macedonia +1 (woman returned from Italy)
• Greece +1 (a woman returned from northern Italy)
• Croatia +1 (a man returned from Italy)
• Austria +1 (from Italy)
• Algeria +1 (from Italy)
• Switzerland +1 (from Italy)
• Brazil +1 (returned from Italy)
• Finland +1 (a woman returned from Milan, Italy); now total 2
• Sweden +1 (a person returned from northern Italy)
• Spain +3 (recently returned from Italy)

Austria, Croatia, Switzerland, Norway (1st case traveled to China), Sweden, Finland, Romania, and Brazil now getting hit, it looks like the virus is creeping into the rest of Europe and South America.

IRAN:
• Iran claims 95 cases and 15 deaths; Iranian MP alleged that there had been 50 deaths prompting US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to voice concern that Iran is suppressing the details of the outbreak. The number of people infected with coronavirus in Iran could be as high as 1,500, experts told Al Arabiya English. Those infected include Iran's Deputy Minister for Health Iraj Harirchi. Iran now has 139 cases and 19 deaths, the highest reported number of deaths from the coronavirus outside China. But Iran's reported mortality rate — about 14 percent — surpasses the rate for other countries by a dramatic margin. Amid a shortage of surgical masks and hand sanitizer in shops, public health experts say Iran could become the hub of a major outbreak across the Middle East, especially given its porous borders with unstable countries at war or in turmoil.

THE IRANIAN CONNECTION:

IRAQ: First case reported; now total 5
KUWAIT: 3 new cases in Kuwait (1st cases), all returning from the Iranian city of Mashhad; now total 26
OMAN: First 2 cases reported; now total 4
AFGHANISTAN: First case reported
UAE: The 12th and 13th cases are from Iran; a 70-year old Iranian visitor and his 64-year-old wife, have been diagnosed, taking the total to thirteen.
PAKISTAN: First 2 cases reported (at least 1 returned from Iran)
LEBANON: First 2 cases (returned from Iran); now total 2
BAHRAIN: Most cases originated from Iran. Now total 33. All citizens and residents who traveled to Iran will be tested.
GEORGIA - First case (a person returned from Iran)

Iran continues to get hit hard and the rest of the Middle East are starting to get hit by COVID-19, as well. Egypt and now Algeria are affected. It’s just a matter of time for rest of the African countries to report their first cases.

Take care.

UPDATE CORONAVIRUS COVID-19: Feb. 28, 2020 @ 10:00 pm ET

The novel coronavirus COVID-19 is affecting (now) 60 countries and territories around the world and 1 international conveyance (the "Diamond Princess" cruise ship harbored in Yokohama, Japan). ICELAND became the 59th country reporting 1 infected case after our update this morning. It is the case of a man who had recently traveled to Northern Italy. The Principality of MONACO became the 60th country to report its first case of contamination which was detected in Monaco and transferred to Nice. COVID-19 is now present in all continents except Antarctica.

As I pointed out in this morning’s update, FRANCE requires close monitoring because of a big leap in new cases +19 overnight for a total of 57. Expect the count to rise in the next few days and most would probably come from the attendees (and their contacts) of the 120-guest wherein also present an individual infected by the virus.

COUNTRIES REPORTING FIRST CASE(S) SINCE THIS MORNING UPDATE:
Iceland +1
Monaco +1

WORLDWIDE: Infected cases: 85,206; Deaths: 2,924; Recovered: 39,487

CHINA: Infected cases: 79,252; Deaths: 2,835; Recovered: 39,020 (? Accuracy of the numbers)

SOUTH KOREA: Infected cases: 2,931 (+594 news cases past 24 hrs); Deaths: 16 (+1 past 24 hrs).
Continue to rise significantly with 594 in 24 hrs. In past 72 hrs, has consistently topped China with number of new cases (granted China’s numbers are accurate).

ITALY: Infected cases: 889 (223 new cases in past 24 hrs); Deaths: 21 (4 new deaths overnight). Deep concern. Numbers continue to spike. Increasing number of countries in and out of Europe with Italian Connection showing first cases or new cases. Add Iceland to the list.

*IRAN: Infected cases: 388 (+143 new cases past 24 hrs); Deaths: 34 (+8 new deaths). A deep concern. Numbers continue to rise with 143 new cases and 8 deaths in Iran overnight. Iran's former ambassador to the Vatican, Hadi Khosroshahi, has died of coronavirus: he was 80 years-old and had a pre existing condition. See news below re: Iran’s reporting of cases and deaths. See news about Iran’s reporting of cases and deaths below.

JAPAN: Infected cases: 233 (+12 new cases past 24 hrs) ; Deaths: 5 (+1 death past 24 hrs). Numbers remain on the rise though not same pace as above countries.

GERMANY: Infected cases: 60; Deaths: 0. 11 new cases overnight gets our attention.

KUWAIT: Infected cases: 45; Deaths: 0. Significant increase in cases in past 72 hours, a neighbor of Iran with even faster rise in numbers – needs closer watch.

SPAIN: Infected cases: 33; Deaths: 0. Keep an eye with 8 new cases reported overnight.

SWITZERLAND: Infected cases: 15; Deaths: 0. Keep an eye with 7 new cases overnight. (almost 50%). Events with more than 1,000 people are now banned in response to the coronavirus threat. "The ban comes into force with immediate effect and is valid until March 15 at least." The Geneva Motor Show (scheduled to start on March 5) is going to be cancelled or postponed.

FRANCE: Infected cases: 57; Deaths: 2. Level of concern just got elevated. Nineteen new cases overnight make me say, que se passe-t-il? Cases likely to increase significantly in the next few days related to the 120-guest gathering attended by friends of an infected individual on Feb. 25. "A new stage of the epidemic has been reached. We’ve now moved atto stage 2: which means the virus circulates in our territory and we have to slow down its spread." said French Health Minister Olivier Véran.

NORWAY: Infected cases: 6; Deaths: 0. Just entered our radar range as 1 of the 2 new cases is an employee of the Eye Department at the Ullevål Hospital in Oslo who had traveled to Northern Italy, showed symptoms on Sunday but STILL WENT TO WORK ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY. Cross transmission to others likely.

SWEDEN: Infected cases: 11 (+4 cases overnight or 36%). Is there something brewing here?

WORLD NEWS:
“Coronavirus: Iran's deaths at least 210, hospital sources say” At least 210 people in Iran have died as a result of the new coronavirus disease, sources in the country's health system have told BBC Persian. The figure is six times higher than the official death toll of 34 given by the health ministry earlier on Friday. Ministry spokesman Kianoush Jahanpour insisted it was being transparent and accused the BBC of spreading lies. It comes after a member of parliament for Qom accused the authorities of a cover-up and the US expressed concern that they may not be sharing information.

UPDATE CORONAVIRUS COVID-19: Feb. 29, 2020 @ 10:00 a.m. ET

The novel coronavirus COVID-19 is affecting (now) 62 countries and territories around the world and 1 international conveyance (the "Diamond Princess" cruise ship harbored in Yokohama, Japan). ECUADOR became the 61st country reporting 1 infected case, an Ecuadorian citizen, resident of Spain, who entered Ecuador on Feb. 14 without showing any symptom. QATAR became the 62nd country to report its first case. The patient is a 36-year-old Qatari who recently returned from Iran, the health ministry said in a statement, adding that he is a stable condition. It means Saudi Arabia is now the only Gulf state not to have signaled any coronavirus cases. What’s their secret? Iran appears to be the epicenter of COVID-19 spread in the Gulf state and the Middle East.

South Korea, Italy, and Iran continue to show significant spikes in their numbers and so is Japan but in less proportion. South Korea continues to report “OMG” numbers daily in the past week with 813 new cases and 1 new death in the past 24 hours alone (today's numbers: 3,150 cases and 17 deaths). In Iran, the official numbers were contradicted by the unofficial report with 5 times more reported. I won’t be surprised if Iran suddenly overtake Italy and even South Korea if the actual numbers were reported (current numbers: 593 cases and 9 deaths). In Europe, the following countries are showing trend of rising numbers and bear close watching France, Spain, and Germany.

The US number of infected cases increased by 3 in the past 24 hours to 66. The 3 new cases include 1 in Washington State: a 18-year-old student from Jackson High School in Mill Creek with no travel history to an outbreak area who on Feb. 24 had body aches, chills and a headache. After feeling better, he returned to school, before test results came out on Feb. 28. The school will be closed for a few days of deep disinfecting.
- 1 in Washington State: a woman in her 50s with confirmed travel to Daegu, South Korea.
- 1 in Oregon which I included in last night’s UPDATE.

STAY TUNED FOR MORE UPDATE.

HAPPY LEAP YEAR DAY!
If you were born on this day, you're much younger in years but not necessarily in looks compared to the rest of us.

UPDATE CORONAVIRUS COVID-19: Feb. 29, 2020 @ 10:00 pm ET

The novel coronavirus COVID-19 is affecting (now) 64 countries and territories around the world and 1 international conveyance (the "Diamond Princess" cruise ship harbored in Yokohama, Japan). IRELAND became the 63rd country with a man in the eastern part of the country who "returned from northern Italy, had symptoms, identified himself, was brought to hospital and confirmed as a positive case for coronavirus.” LUXEMBOURG became the 64th country to report its first case. This is a man around the age of 40 who returned from Italy through Charleroi last week with his family. He is doing well. Family members (with no symptoms) have been placed in quarantine. Contact tracing (to isolate his contacts) is being performed.

WORLDWIDE: COVID-19 is present in every continent except Antarctica.

HERE ARE THE NEW NUMBERS (INFECTED CASES AND DEATHS) ON COVID-19 AS OF FEB. 29, 2020 10:00 pm ET (Listed are countries that are making significant changes in number of cases/deaths and the US)

WORLDWIDE: Infected cases: 86,991; Deaths: 2,978; Recovered: 42,336
CHINA: Infected cases: 79,826; Deaths: 2,870; Recovered: 41,825
SOUTH KOREA: Infected cases: 3,526; Deaths: 17
ITALY: Infected cases: 1,128; Deaths: 29
IRAN: Infected cases: 593; Deaths: 43
JAPAN: Infected cases: 241; Deaths: 5
FRANCE: Infected cases: 100; Deaths: 2
GERMANY: Infected cases: 79; Deaths: 0
SPAIN: Infected cases: 58; Deaths: 0
NORWAY: Infected cases: 15; Deaths: 0
NETHERLANDS: Infected cases: 7; Deaths: 0
USA: Infected cases: 69 (with 1 presumptive case); Deaths: 1 (In State of Washington - a man in his 50s who had underlying health conditions). NOTE: The first American who died of COVID-19 was a 60-year-old woman who died in a hospital in Wuhan, China, on around Feb. 8, 2020. https://www.thedailybeast.com/first-american-dies-of-coronavirus-in-wuhan

BRIEF INSIGHT ON EACH COUNTRY:

SOUTH KOREA: Remain a deep concern. Significant numbers being reported with new cases increasing daily. Numbers as of this writing: Infected cases: 3,526 with 1,189 cases in the past 24 hours; Deaths 17 (+1). South Korea has implemented aggressive drive testing its populace including drive-in and roadside testing for COVID-19. South Korea is very transparent with their reporting.

ITALY: The present count is 1,128 cases and 29 deaths. Among the 1,049 active cases, 401 (38%) are hospitalized, and 105 (10%) are in intensive care. Among the 79 closed cases, 50 (63%) have recovered, 29 (37%) have died. Need to know more about the patients who died such as age, co-morbid medical problems, and sex). My 2 cents input that majority in their 70s-80s with chronic medical problems. http://www.protezionecivile.gov.it/media-comunicazione/comunicati-stampa/dettaglio/-/asset_publisher/default/content/coronavirus-sono-1049-i-positivi

IRAN: Reported 43 people out of 593 confirmed cases in past 24 hours. The new toll represents a jump of 205 cases – a 150% increase from the 388 reported the day before. Iran tops Italy in number of deaths due to COVID-19 outside of China. Five Iran parliament members have so far tested positive for the virus. Iran plans to test “tens of thousands.” Azerbaijan closes the border with Iran over coronavirus concerns. https://twitter.com/FarsNews_Agency/status/1233693331932229632 https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-health-iran-azerbaijan/azerbaijan-closes-border-with-iran-over-coronavirus-concerns-idUSKBN20N0MY

FRANCE: Reported 43 new cases in France bringing the total in the country to 100. Three days ago, it was only 14. As a result, France announced, “All public gatherings of more than 5,000 people in a confined space are temporarily banned across France,” Health Minister Olivier Veran told journalists. The Paris half-marathon scheduled for Sunday, March 1 has been cancelled as a consequence. https://www.lemonde.fr/sante/article/2020/02/29/coronavirus-deux-soignants-de-l-hopital-tenon-testes-positifs-un-premier-cas-detecte-a-roissy_6031343_1651302.html; http://www.leparisien.fr/societe/coronavirus-la-contamination-gagne-du-terrain-conseil-de-defense-et-conseil-des-ministres-exceptionnels-ce-samedi-29-02-2020-8269614.php

SPAIN: Same level of concern as France. Today’s total of 58 cases with 25 new cases in the past 24 hours indicates ongoing viral transmission.

NORWAY: I am concern even though small increases in number of cases reported daily in past few days. In past 24 hours, there were 9 new cases with current total of 15 (yesterday 6).

UK: Is on higher alert as it reported first death a couple days ago. Also, it has been steadily reporting one-digit increase in new cases in the past few days. https://twitter.com/BBCSheffield/status/1233390506828279809

IRAQ: Has current total of 15 but 5 new cases were reported in past 24 hours. May be nothing here but neighboring Iran now has a total of 593 cases up from its first case of 10 days ago and these numbers probably underreported.

NORTH KOREA: Infected cases: 0; Deaths: 0 (World leaders should be talking to Kim Jun Un and find out how he is able to stop COVID-19 from infecting his country).

US: CDC just updated the numbers as follows: Infected cases: 69 (with 1 presumptive case); Deaths: 1. These include 44 people who were aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship, three people repatriated from China and 22 US cases, according to CDC. A presumptive positive case has tested positive by a public health lab and is pending confirmation from CDC.

NOTE: The above and following opinions expressed are just my own 2 cents and should not be construed as an expert opinion ---

My serious concern are the cases reported in the west coast (CA, WA). For example, 4 cases in that area are without related travel history an indication of community spread. Another is the news that, “More than 50 people linked to skilled nursing facility in Washington to be tested for coronavirus.” It appears that there are "approximately 108 residents at the facility and about 180 staff”. https://www.cnn.com/asia/live-news/coronavirus-outbreak-02-29-20-intl-hnk/index.html Since it is a skilled nursing facility, I will assume most if not all, of the residents are elderly and probably with co-existing chronic medical problems, the highest fatality rate among the populace who contract COVID-19. I anticipate the numbers in the west coast to increase. Hope I am wrong.

Good Night.
