Lens compatibility: Reflex-NIKKOR.C 1:8 500MM with Nikon F4

I have tried to mount this lens, which is the original 500MM Reflex on my Nikon F4 and gotten resistance. Can anyone suggest how I might make this combination compatible, or am I just out of luck?

Ken Rockwell has a review of that lens. Scroll down to the compatibility section. It's supposed to be compatible with the F4. The review is at this link:

That link is not for the OP's lens. His should mount easily, however. Could be a damaged mount.

I don't think it is the mount for I have no issues with my F, F2 & F3, just the F4. I just went and tried it again and the issue is the tripod fitting on the lens. It can't get past the MB 1 battery pack while it is mounted on the camera. Guess I'll just stick to using one of the other bodies with this lens. Thanks for your insights.

Will it mount when turned for a vertical shot? And how did you get an MB-1 on an F4? (MB-21 maybe?)

Yes, it is an MB-21. I was relying on memory and it is definitely starting to go. I was able to get it mounted when I turned the tripod mount without any difficulty. The fitting must need some lubrication, for I had to use another body in order to turn it but thank you for the suggestion.

The grease may have dried out. Glad you got it mounted. I have two F4 bodies, and usually keep an MB-20 on one just for use with a tripod-mounted lens. Long live film!
