Printer thoughts

It's time to find a new printer. I'm leaning towards either a Canon Pixma Pro 10 or 100. I have not looked at the Epson series of photo printers. Just looking for opinions, thoughts, etc.
Thanks in advanced

I have the Pro-100 and like it. It uses dye inks. The more expensive Pro-10 uses pigment inks. Historically it is thought that the advantage of pigment ink is longevity and the advantage of dye ink is a lower probability of print head clogging. Canon is not very good as saying exactly how long either will last without fading. I suspect either will outlast me or my ability to see clearly!

At a photography show where Canon had a booth I could not see a quality difference between large prints coming out of the Pro-100 next to the Pro-10. It may be that the Pro-10 is a little better at black and white due to having an black (or maybe gray) cartridge for that.

That’s the story in a nutshell. At any rate, the prints will outlast silver halide prints if kept under glass or in dark storage.

Be mindful of cost per ounce of ink. Printers with larger cartridges are usually less expensive to feed... over time. But, you want SMALL cartridges if you seldom print. The ink should be used within six months of installation.

"Be mindful of cost per ounce of ink." More important to me is the cost per print and being able to replace only the cartridges needed when they are needed. Cost per print is very hard to determine, but I think the big 13x19 prints are about $4.50 on the Pro-100. Amazon makes the other part easy enough. I'm getting overnight delivery on single cartridges as I need them.

Cartridge use may depend on what you shoot and what you print. If I shot a lot of pink flowers instead of green tree landscapes, the cartridge use would probably be different. So, as an infrequent printer, some of my cartridges are well beyond your six month guideline. That may be a reason to like the Pro-100 because the dye inks with Canon's engineering last longer without clogging.

I agree... I'd give a nod to the Pro-100 in your shoes.

I also use a printer with single cartridges. When one runs out and I install one from my shelf, I buy another one. Sometimes, I'll buy a package of all of them, because I know I'm going to print a wide variety of subjects. Other times, I'll buy more yellows and magentas than cyan. I tend to use 3X as much black as the other colors, so I get the high capacity black cartridges.

I've had the Pro-10 for about 5 years and have no problems with it. It gives me beautiful prints in either color or black and white. A wonderful photo printer.
