I know that when importing photos from an SD card you are offered the option of deleting them from the card but that's not what I want to do. I want to be able to import them and then view them all with a view to deleting from the SD card the ones I don't want to keep. Why would I want to do this when I can easily view and then delete them on the camera itself? Because the pictures aren't large enough on the camera for me to make the correct decision each time.
I can't see a way to do this with the built-in Photos app. Is there another app which provides this functionality, or another way to do this?

Windows Explorer, Use Medium sized Icons and a preview window. If files are raw, a codec when need to be downloaded from camera manufacturer site.
If built in photo app is for a Mac, then someone else can provide an answer.
BTW, I've never seen an option to delete files when importing.

Why do you want to delete some but not all photos from the card?

Usually I do my culling after the shoot when I can sit at my desk and look at things on the big screen. If I didn’t have enough space on my card I would buy additional or larger cards rather than trying to free up space in real time.

I would never delete anything from my card until I was certain that the files are backed up.

Yes, some apps will let you move files rather than copy them. Not a good idea. If there’s a glitch in the transfer, the original file is gone.

The problem is that using operating system capabilities to “delete” files just moves them to a file that starts with “.”.

I use the camera itself to do deletions, which are actual deletions right away.

As others have suggested, I do that only after having copied them to, and viewed on, the computer itself, because I may change my mind about deleting them after seeing them on the computer and/or time for reflection.

In reply to some of the questions, this is for traveling. The only thing I have to view the photos large enough to evaluate is an iPad. We like to shoot a bunch and review them that night on the iPad. The iPad won’t hold enough photos for the whole trip. So what I would like to do is get rid of duplicates and bad shots right then, not just on the iPad, but on the sd card. Then when I get home, put the photos still on the sd card, into the computer to process them. Can this deletion be done with an iPad? Thanks for your input!

Yes, you should be able to do them using the iPad, but I would do them using the camera because it is safer. But don’t take our word - try whatever system you decide at home before you try doing it on the road.

Files that start with a "." ? - That's a hidden file. Never heard that OS delete simply hides the file. I'll have to check that out. Quick check - more to it that simply starting file with a "." to hide it.
What OS are you referring to?

Are you using a card reader for the iPad or are you using the WiFi function on a camera? I use an iPad when traveling and those are two ways that I can use to view files. I now use to the Canon Connect App on the iPad with the built in WiFi on my 5dIV and rarely use the dongle as it will only allow you to delete or save all, not individual files. The WiFi & app will let you delete individual files from the card that is still in the camera so it leaves no residual data. All that said though, I have become a firm believer in keeping them all on the card till I get home and to a place to process them. You never know what a dark or overexposed shot on a jpeg can end up being with some TLC and a RAW file.

I know both Windows and Linux do it. Any O/S that allows you to ‘undelete’ a file needs some sort of facility to “hide” a file between ‘deletion’ and actual removal from the media {“emptying trash”}. Actually, the O/S moves the file to a directory starting with ‘.’

Buy an IPad with a larger memory. Mine has 512g, and I have over 20,000 pics on it, before traveling, and add another 5 to 10,000 from the trip. Never a problem.

Use Faststone Image Viewer - it's free and it works with all files.

I import all my images to my computer, then delete the ones I don't want. Then and only then do I erase everything from my card. I don't use cards for anything but temporary storage until I can them into a computer and backed up.

Use a Ravpower AC750, copy the files from the card to two different memory sticks, external hard drive etc, and reuse the card(s). You can monitor the transfer with a phone, tablet or laptop.

You could just delete them in the camera. I do this all the time in my D500. I can easily enlarge an image with my fingers and my fingers can make the shots go forward on backward.
Some times though I want to see it bigger on some images that are on the fence, I will then load those into the computer.

You could buy more memory cards, and delete when you get home, on your computer.
