Planning ahead for an autofocus lens for the Nikon D300

I'm looking ahead to purchasing an autofocus lens. I have a very small budget, think under $100 so I'll be going to KEH again.
My photos are pretty eclectic but I do a lot of shots or work I do in my machine shop and the aircraft I maintain.
I'm looking at;
NIKON NIKKOR 28-80MM F/3.5-5.6 D which might be a little too long at the short end.
The NIKON NIKKOR 18-55MM F/3.5-5.6 G ASPHERICAL AF-S DX VR. I had a lens of this range on my Pentax and liked it a lot.
NIKON NIKKOR 35-135MM F/3.5-4.5 MACRO. I like the idea of the greater range but again it may be too long at the lesser end.
NIKON NIKKOR 28-105MM F/3.5-4.5 D IF MACRO.
Any other lens you'd suggest?
Thanks Folks

Rick

Thanks for your thoughts.
Add to the list (although it's a budget stretcher) NIKON NIKKOR 18-200MM F/3.5-5.6 G ASPHERICAL ED IF DX AF-S VR. Too much zoom?

It depends upon what you are shooting. From your examples, I would say too much ZOOM.

...I'm with PixelStan77 in recommending the NIKON NIKKOR 18-55MM F/3.5-5.6 G ASPHERICAL AF-S DX VR. Outstanding sharpness and range for your needs plus the close-up capability is awesome, near Macro in ability!
~ See: https://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18-55mm-vr-ii.htm

"This Nikon 18-55mm VR II DX is fantastic little lens. It's super-sharp and has Vibration Reduction (VR) so you don't need a tripod.
It focuses so close that it replaces most people's need for a macro lens.
It's among the lightest lenses ever made by Nikon." Ken Rockwell

When I was a Canon shooter, I purchased a Sigma 18-270mm lens; I had retired the lens by the time I moved back to Pentax because I thought it had too much 'zoom'. My Pentax K-30 was kitted with a 18-55mm lens, but I purchased a 18-135mm lens because that lens has a motor, not because of 'reach'. In general I would agree that 18-55mm is probably enough 'zoom'.

I used the 18-55 on my D40 and D5100 for 90% of my photos for 10 years. I compared it with many other Nikon lenses, and none were sharper. It also focuses very close, is lightweight, and within you budget.

I was going to suggest it, but might be a little long. Can't go wrong with the 18-55 for close work.

I think best would be to wait, at least until you have a adaquate budget, before considering purchasing a lens, I think under a hundred bucks just don't cut it, even for a used one!

I bought my first dslr (a D70s) 14 years ago. With it came an 18-70 3.5/4.5 G lens. I moved up body-wise, of course, but that lens is still with me...in fact, right now this minute, it's hooked to my D300 which I had converted to IR. I've done alot of shooting thru that glass and it's just plain fine.

I agree with many UHH members here about the Nikon 18-55mm. It's a very sharp lens and has a useful focal length range.

I see that you're using a laydown threading insert on the lathe. I also work in a machine shop. We use ones made by Seco and Carmex. We machine a lot of standard 60 degree and 7/45 degree buttress threads where I work with laydown threading inserts like yours

CO, Buying external and internal threading tools with replaceable inserts was one of the smartest things I've ever done. I used to sharpen my own out of high speed but the inserts just save so much time. Even on my little engine lathe all it takes to make them last is a little cutting oil.
Sorry for going off topic, but since I retired I don't get to talk to a fellow machinist very often. After loving my wife and flying, it's a toss up between photography and making chips for my favorite things to do.
