This is organized as a series of tutorials, doesn't skip the science but also gives plenty of real world examples. There is a book also. https://www.cambridgeincolour.com/

Similar layout here https://photographylife.com/learn-photography

Reliably correct info and interesting too

Check out creativelive.com. They have lots of photography courses covering everything from fundamentals to post processing to how to start a professional business. Broadcast courses are free to watch, but all courses are offered for purchase to download and watch at your own pace. John Greengo's fundamental courses are quite good.

Thanks for posting this.
I am not a novice, but am always looking for great sources to help explain things.
I had forgotten about Cambridge in Color.
Great site!

You can look at Pima Community College online courses https://www.ed2go.com/pima/
There are a number of six-week photography courses available. Peruse the Arts & Design category. I am very pleased with the courses taken there and would recommend.

Many, if not most, public libraries offer access to Lynda.com. Owned by Microsoft, it is a cornucopia of courses on a wide variety of subjects including photography.

You might try this guy:

Marc Levoy - Lectures on Digital Photography beginning with the first one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7HrM-fk_Rc&list=PL7ddpXYvFXspUN0N-gObF1GXoCA-DA-7i&index=1

He taught at Stanford, course CS 178, and now teaches for Googal. Consists of 18 videos, each an hour+ long. He also provides all his slides via PDF.

You might like “Fundamentals of Photography” by Joel Sartore. Available from The Great Courses online. The workbook covers 24 Lectures and includes four dvds.

I'll second the CreativeLive courses. I've taken their Lightroom and Photoshop classes. John Greengo has good tutorials on cameras such as Canon 5D III, Canon R, Olympus EM-1 Mk2.

That is a most excellent course full of hard science and practical applications, but most assuredly not for someone 'one step beyond complete novice.'

Udemy.com has a bunch of useful courses; don't pay more than $9.99 or $10.99 until you know what you really want--it has sales all the time. There is a selection of free courses, too.

Just checked, that is available to borrow as a download from my local library, maybe yours also?

What brand and make of camera do you shoot with? YouTube has thousands of free tutorials. I buy some and I study every day. I shoot Nikon and my latest enjoyment is with Steve Perry from Back Country Gardens. He's a Nikon focus system guru and really easy to learn from. I buy his books. I also use and enjoy several others. You should never stop learning even when you've mastered a technique. I hope I learn till the day I die.
