This may have been discussed many times here already - but I wanted to share my experience with the Nikon 500mm f/5.6 PF lens for birds in flight.

Four word recap:

Best ever wildlife lens.

Now, that’s my personal assessment. But it’s based on thousands of photos over the last six months. It has extremely fast subject acquisition and is terrific in all types of lighting situations when coupled with the Nikon D850.

And it is particularly good at capturing birds in flight in relatively low light.

I have gotten more keepers and potential wall hangers with this lens in six months than I have gotten in six years with other Nikon lenses.

Here’s one from yesterday. I had one shot as this crested caracara lifted off on a gloomy and overcast day.

One shot and the lens delivered once again.

My bad. I thought sharing my reaction to the lens and one sample shot was appropriate.

Obviously not based on your reaction.

I concur. Since I received my 500mm pf my keepers have increased and the images are much sharper.

I tend to agree with your choice of section in which to post your assessment of the Nikon lens. Besides, I don’t think we have a “galley” section here. RWR probably meant to say “gallery”.

Thanks. No intent on my part to anger anyone.

Looks great! I'd like that lens! As for posting sections (proper place or not), if it is an issue I'm sure the Admin will effect change. Doesn't bother me in the least...... seems like a photography discussion item....

My fault for not proofreading - I did mean “Gallery.” Admin often moves pictures posted here in Main Photography Discussion to the Gallery or other appropriate section.
I think most photos posted online say more about the photographer than the equipment. I would like to view some Velvia 50 slides on my lightbox under a 20X loupe to judge the 500 PF’s image quality.

As a newcomer here I had seen a couple of discussions (postings) of lenses and/or camera bodies with a sample shot. Didn’t realize I had erred in my posting.

Rookie mistake. The first comment left here startled me ... but that’s the way of online forums. Some people are gruff and some people aren’t.

Thanks for your kindness. New to this forum but 20 years as a photographer including the last ten professionally. Thought my opinion on the lens might help someone else out who was interested in this lens.

That lens is definitely on the list. B&H informs me every other week or so that it is “still not available,” which has been OK because the funds to buy it have not been availability either. But a few more posts like this may make me change my priorities!

Yes - I had to wait six months to get mine. But it is one terrific piece of glass!
