I realized when typing the post title that what I am looking for may not exist and be functional. With that said, we are hiking down to Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the Grand Canyon in two weeks and wanted to take advantage of the dark sky at night and of course sunrise and sunset. Some form of stabilization will be necessary. I could use rocks or other natural supports but these may limit compositional creativity. I will be carrying a Canon 5d IV with a 24-70 f2.8 lens weighing a total of about 4.5 lbs. My question is, does anyone have experience with small table top size tripods? Any advice would be appreciated as well as Grand Canyon photo tips.

Look At the Tripods in B&H Photo or Adorama, you will find tripods of different sizes and price along with people that have rated them in use. Enjoy your trip.

Are you looking for an aluminum or carbon fiber tripod? A 24-70mm lens is not a long lens, like a 200-500mm or a 150-600mm lens. There are many to choose from. And, you don't have to spend a lot of money to get a good tripod. I was given a table top tripod as a gift. I had no use for it, and gave it away. Someone gave me an aluminum 50" tripod, and I have no use for that either. I'll donate that to a High School or Community College. Good luck in your selection.

You can use a small tabletop tripod by holding it and pressing against any vertical surface too. I do that occasionally in situations where full size tripods are restricted.

It is not a tripod, but if you look at how it works, it will be rock steady for night photography on any solid surface.

I wonder if one could use that technique at Atelope Canyon since they do not allow photo tours any longer.

The platy pod could be an option. I may need to get down low with the scorpions when shooting. It looks like it would pack well.

The platypod is on the wish list. I know several people using them. Works great for smaller rigs and packs well. Really need to try it myself.

This is for GoPro and 360° cameras. Not appropriate for a 5 lb camera and lens.

If you are doing night sky shooting, you'll likely need a tripod that you can use standing up for the most flexibility in composing. I would suggest a Feisol CT3442.

I don't think you are going to find anything lighter that will be as stable. and it folds down to 19", weighs 2.4 lbs. Add another 1.25 lb for a ball head and you have a functional camera support.

Remember that going down to the ranch is pretty hard so limit your backpack weight accordingly.
Also, returning to the rim is an order of magnitude more difficult and you must carry EVERYTHING out that you carry in.
Please show us the resulting pics.
Best wishes!

Works great on my 4/3 G85. Got tired after 30 years of lugging all that weight arounf on my back!
Sense your shooting with a full frame DSLR I would go with a carbon fiber one, not cheap but worth the money. Did that trip years ago with 30lbs. on my back and metal tripod. Took the Helicopter out for $50 when it came time to leave! Best $50 Helicopter ride I ever spent.
