For those of you who insist on carrying their camera gear on board (who doesn't !) there is a useful list here of airline cabin bag size and weight limits. Best to double check the small print on the airlines own website.

Many European airlines impose a weight limit on your carry on bags. Also, your cabin allowance may include an underseat 'personal' item not shown here which may or may not be part of your weight allowance. Some of the discount airlines have very strict policies and will even weigh cabin bags a second time on the boarding ramp. Very often the checked bag fee will be more than your seat fare. Stuffing your jacket pockets with your big lenses only goes so far.

Really think about what lenses you really need! I just use 24-70, and 70-200 f2.8 carried in pouches - Lowe pro. Many years ago on a Jumbo premium economy photo rucksack was too big for the lockers - bag was taken to be placed in the hold, removed camera body, and the 2 zooms were wrapped in the flight blanket and placed in the seat lockers. Regularly have bag sized and weighed so be very careful what you carry on board. Cruising without flight is much easier to board, as long as you can carry it you can take it. Usual x/ ray and sometimes a manual search.

I usually try to travel as light as possible...Body and no more than 2 lenses, wrapped in socks or sweatshirts in my carry-on. Then, curse myself for leaving one lens. I have a CPAP, and it has little niches where a charger, extra battery, and memory cards can be carried. My problem is I pack, and come in well under the airline weight limit...Going.
Returning...She Who Must be Obeyed is always over the limit, and expects me to take her stuff, which makes both bags overweight.

Probably the main reason I caught it is that lately I’ve been quoting what I thought were new news articles only to be told “that’s old news”. Very embarrassing. After about 10 times of that, I’ve finally gotten into the habit of checking the date FIRST.

Need to keep in mind the type aircraft you will be on as these number most likely apply to larger aircraft. I ran into an issue 2yrs ago flying Continental. Backpack fit just fine flying into Denver but switched over to a regional aircraft going into Jackson Hole; no way pack would fit into overhead and barely made it for under the seat.

That’s the truth! It becomes more and more challenging to pack for our trips. A few years ago, while getting ready for a particularly challenging trip for which to pack camera gear-wise, I weighed every blasted piece of gear and made a list for future reference. That list also includes weights and dimensions of luggage pieces as well as backpacks. Amazing how much some backpacks weigh when totally empty.

Thanks. My go-to travel kit is M43. I can get 4 lenses, a body, battery charger, extra battery, some filters, in a small sling pack, smaller than the average back pack, and it easily qualifies as a personal item and fits under the seat with no problem.
