Back Button Focus problem

In July of last year, my d7000 was stolen. I finally got a replacement, a d7500, from my insurance company this month. When I had the d7000, I was able to set up back button focus with no problem. When I set up the new camera for back button focus, I ran into a problem. When I focus on a single point, and then adjust for composition, it refocuses just slightly. When this happens, I lose the focus point and many times, I cannot engage the shutter button. I have it set on AF-ON, AF-C and AF-ON only. Even just moving the camera, I can hear the focusing mechanism move slightly. What am I missing or doing wrong?

Presuming you are in single af-s(ingle) setting, make sure custom Menu setting A2 AF-S Priority Selection is set top "Release". If you are in af-c setting, make sure A1 is set to "Release".

Search for Steve Perry's books (Backcountry Gallery) regarding the Nikon focusing system. They are complete and full of good information.

I did as you suggested, but it still does the same thing. Any other ideas?

Is it the same for all your lenses?

Be sure to defeat the focusing function of the half pressing of the shutter release!

I have not attempted to use my other lenses. Good idea. I think I will do so tomorrow.

I believe I have. I've followed the videos on YouTube and I think I did it correctly. I did it the same way I did on my D7000. However, I could be wrong. If you know how, please give me instructions or a place I can look it up or see. Thank you for your response.

I am not a Nikon guy, but U-Tube probably has a tutorial, which can help

On the front of the camera just below the Lens release button is a button for setting auto focus or manual focus. If you press that button and hold it in you should see a S or a C in the top display. Using the Command dial set it to S. That should resolve your issue. I was experiencing the same issue on my 7200 and that fixed it

Silly question, but are you remembering to take your finger off the AF-On button before recomposing?

Other than that, double check that AF only is selected.

You are probably starting to move the camera to recompose before your finger is off the button. I had the same problem.

If you still have the "focus" button depressed when you move it then it will change. That is because with the button depressed it is in continuous focusing mode. Release the button before recomposing.

You are not holding down the focus button when you re-compose, are you?
