Yes, you CAN use the EN-EL 18 series batteries in the D500 battery grip, but that battery will require the BL-5 end cap to fit the grip.
The biggest downside is the cost of the charger for that 18 series battery.
I use them in both my D500 and D850 grips, and they do give between 5000 and 6000 shots per charge, about 4 times the shots of any of the 15 series batteries.
