Something I just noticed about the UUH search function

It only returns 30 entries, and not necessarily the latest.
That's it, 30. No next page for additional entries.

I'd definitely not yell at people for not using the built in search here.
So there is a good chance they might be missing a bunch of possible entries!

(Unless I did something worng.)

Longshadow, I've noticed the same thing. In fact, my opinion of the search function on this site isn't something about which one would want to write home and tell everybody. I did a search for one of my own topics one time. The search engine failed to find it, even when entering the title of the post.

Exactly what I did, looking for a post from the middle of December, 2019.
It didn't show up in the list, but stuff from 2015 did.......

Knowing that I will now always use Google, appending site:uglyhedgehog.com to the search arguments.

Hey Guys,
If you are looking for one of your own topics or postings, go to user profile and they are all listed there, as post started and post in general...

That is very true, and I am quite aware of it.

But I was investigating the search function.

Good points. I think the search function is based on the title of the post and so many of the titles are so poor that they do not contribute to easily found subjects.

We all need to be aware of doing a better job of describing the subject of the post as accurately as possible. A title like "Question" is useless and could just as easily be "Ice Cream" for all its value of trying to get an answer to specific question about photo bracketing, for example.

This is very evident in the Gallery section. The title of too many posts is some "cutesy" name that does nothing to describe the image(s) being posted. Save the cutesy clever name for the title square in the body of the post. If I am interested in images of a National Park it does not help to have a post titled Big Fella for a pic of a bison in Yellowstone. I will ignore that post completely.

As it stands now I will look at only 5 or 6 gallery posts cuz of all of the cutey pie names or the names that are quite accurate but the subject isn't of interest to me. Those are posts I appreciate but do not open becuz I am not interested in Iowa Corn Field or Pacific Sunset etc. Nothing wrong with them but my time is limited and I can only view the ones that contain something of interest for me.

Thanks for letting me vent on your post, but hopefully I have enhanced what you have so accurately stated.

No problem! Poor titles, one of my pet peeves.

Yes you did!

The search IS based on the title.

"Bison in Yellowstone" would be much better then "Big Fella" . I've seen some HUGE palmetto bugs!

"Question" and "Help" are worthless.
There are many that I open only to find I really didn't want to open.

You say "There are many that I open only to find I really didn't want to open" That is so true so I now only open posts with specific titles referring to subjects that may interest me. Life is too short to waste time viewing inanities and absurdities by people who think they are being clever.

Understood, I will have to agree on the titles as you are referring to...

But then, one needs to search every post one has made. That can be very time consuming.

Hey Bill, I discovered that single-page return awhile back and asked Admin. He's aware. But as everyone understands, the search function is pretty much useless...for the reasons given here.

I suppose it would help listing all the matches though. Only listing 30, one would guess that what was searched for did not exist if it wasn't listed. I wonder if he's working on the anomaly.

I didn't get the impression that it was a priority

I guess since people don't use informative/relative words in the titles, it really doesn't matter.
