I am somewhat embarrassed to this question, but? I recently had a computer repair shop install a clean copy of Windows 10, all went well. I have 4 hard drives in my computer, the C drive has the operating system and programs installed on it. Another hard drive in the computer contains all of my photos, LR catalog and catalog backups. The drive drive letter that I had used prior to is no longer available(no idea as to why) so I was forced to use one of the other drive letters that was available, P in this case. Now I don't seem to be able to tell lightroom where my pictures are located ... can anyone help? I am able to tell LR they are in P drive but it seems to want me to add all the sub-folders individually ... I don't want to make a bigger mess that I already have.

Perhaps the computer repair shop you used could help?

I know where all my photographs are physically located on my computer - internal drive P, the computer repair shop only reformatted the system drive("C"). I just need to know how I let LR know where they are located ... had to change the drive letter after I got the computer back from repair. Thanks for your suggestion

The repair shop is your best source if convenient. They had to unplug the other hard drives to do the install as recommended by Microsoft. They may have done some cable organizing and reinstalled them in different positions when they reattached them. I believe they are all location sensitive (ie where they are attached to the cables and motherboard) and cannot be reassigned in the bootup sequencer. Near the fringe of my limited experience.

Right click the start button click on dish management, highlight your picture files disk and name the drive name it what lightroom has your pictures on

Check the thread on "moving pictures to an external hard drive" from the last 2 days. There is a response near the end with a procedure for telling Lightroom where your photos are.

I will respectfully copy a response from a different post today. I first thought you wanted everything back exactly as it was. Just for Lightroom do this :

For my Mac, I used Carbon Copy Cloner with the verification option to copy my entire picture library. My top file is called images with numerous directories, subdirectories, and files emanating from it. After the transfer was complete, I erased the original files. To direct Lightroom to my photos, I clicked on the images file in the left panel (it had a question mark next to it showing that it could not find them) and then it showed me my directories for the computer. By clicking on the external drive and the clicking on the images file, Lightroom found all my images and was happy

Thank cactuspic when you get it fixed!!

Thanks for the replies - I know where my pictures are on my computer, I can open the file folder and actually view all of them. I was able to tell LR what folder all the pictures are in, but all the subfolders under the mail folder, containing the pictures are grayed out
The LR catalog and catalog backups are in the same folder where the pictures are located.

Rename your new drive the same as the old drive and LR will link up again. The program remembers the name of the hard drive, just as it remembers the name of images, and this is how it links up to folders.

I thought of that also, however the letter G is not a choice that is available under "disk management" on the computer (don't know why)
Again, I am able in LR to specify the P drive as the source but all of the subfolders under the the source are grayed out and will not let me select any of them
Thanks for your help

I think what you are asking is “find missing photos” go to menu at the top. I believe it is under file and run that.

Can you go rename drive G to some other letter, thus freeing it (G)up. Then rename your photo drive to G. I did this once when I had one of two hard drives unplugged for a while and it goofed up my letters.

It seems the answers you’ve gotten haven’t resolved your problem. I would suggest that you post this question to the Lightroom Queen, Victoria Brampton. She helped me more than once!

this could very well be true, but I think the op can also rename the drives. But I think the operating system will assign assign the drive letter as the y are plugged in, which the repair shop could do quickly.

My guess is that the issue revolves around naming (or renaming) the drives corretly. The comouter shop you used should be able to help you fix this especially if you told them what drive had to have what name for LR to work properly for you.

If you cannot resolve , post same question at Naturescapes.net digital forum and hopefully someone can help you.
