Need input on Nikon D7200 vs D7500

I use a D7100 and a D7500, the choice being what I want to shoot. If I need the better resolution, such as a long telephoto shot, I will use the D7100; otherwise the D7500. You can't go wrong with either one.

I'm looking at buying one or the other of these 2 bodies. Prices of refurb. models are very close and each model has something I like. The tilt screen, better processor and large buffer are a big + on the D7500 but, the available battery grip, battery life and 2 SD slots are features I like on the D7200. Can UHH Nikon users add input that could tip the scale either way? Thanks!

I have a D7500 listed for sale here with the Nikon 70-300 PF full frame lens. But I will sell the camera only. PM me if you are interested. It has been a great camera with excellent dynamic range, beautiful color, great focus system and totally trouble free performance. Sorry I can't do a comparison with the D7200.

I, like Max, use a 7100 and thoroughly enjoy it. 2 slots and great pics. Never a problem with the pics or clarity. An older camera but another one you might want to consider.

For what it's worth, the D7500 does not have a depth of field preview button, which is something I appreciate on my D7200.

I never noticed, I guess because I never used it. I have been pretty good at estimating depth of field, and find the preview to be not very helpful because of the darker image in the viewfinder.

The workaround is to use liveview, which is supposed to show the actual DOF, but that can be a slow process.

Oops, meant to quote my reply about the missing DOF button on the D7500.

I know you’re considering the D7200 and the D7500, but if your budget can accommodate it, I’d follow the advice of going for the D500. Not only is the D500 and outstanding camera for action/sports photography, it’s a great camera for wildlife and birds, as well as landscape photography. Don’t get the idea that the D500 is a niche camera. It’s is a great all around camera that is especially suited for moving subjects. Just a thought.

👍. I totally agree. Bought a D500, and love it. Great for sports and wildlife photos, as well as anything else you want to capture. Granted, it’s higher priced than either of the other two cameras, but there are great deals on refurbished right now. It’s worth the extra bucks.

I have both cameras and you can’t go wrong with either. I couldn’t resist the $599 price of the D7500’s and I took it to Scotland and Ireland where I shot over 10K images - most through the tour bus window. The 7500 has a slightly faster focus and , in my opinion, better low light performance. The single card slot was a small inconvenience as I had to change cards in the rain during the Military Tattoo performance but it took only about 30 seconds inside a rain sleeve in the dark. Please check my Scotland posts for examples of what this camera can do - especially on landscapes. I take both cameras with me to avoid lens changes.

I like having 2 card slots on my d7200 and that is one of the features that helped me decide to buy the 7200 over the 7500. I use the 2 card slots option of card 1: RAW files card 2: jpeg backup...when traveling i change card 1 every day...i have a 64gb card in slot 2 and usually one, maybe 2 cards are needed on a 3 week trip....i change this one only when it is full...

I have only used the D7200. I chose it over the D7500 on advice of a retired pro friend who suggested image quality is a little better. For me that trumps all other considerations (given comparable price).

Using a 128GB SD card I never run short in a single day. So the second slot is used in street photography: if a giant person gets upset and demands destruction of the card, pull out the (empty) tiny-GB card from slot 2 and crush it.

Articulating screen seems like something to break...

You asked specifically about the D7200 and the D7500. A bit over a year ago I was looking to buy a DSLR, and those two cameras fell into my price point. I did a feature comparison. As an image scientist from a major company in the photographic business, I have used many cameras. The features on the D7200 were slightly more favorable to me and my application, and the price was about 18% less. So that is what I bought.

Look carefully at what you think you will use.

As stupid as it sounds, a factor in selecting this line was the onboard flash. I don't use it often, but wanted it on this camera. Perhaps I made a mistake, because that feature I have used exactly 3 times in the last year or so. If you are buying refurbished, you will not loose much $$ should you end up with an incorrect decision and decide to switch later. But more likely, many people try to keep the old body. Which is why I have two display shelves with my old cameras on them.

Nobody mentions the updated processor in the 7500?

Another reason to choose the D7200 is that it takes older Nikon lenses and the D7500 does not
