It is HD policy to give military discounts to active duty vets, retired from the military vets, disabled vets. All other vets receive a discount on holidays, armed forces day etc. but not on a daily basis. If Lowe's is changing it's policy, I will go along with the credit card deal. Just because you have one does not mean you have to use it! Besides I pay off my cards at the end of the billing period so there is no interest paid usually. To avoid missing a payment, I have all cards set up with minimum auto pay. This way I never get charged the 25.00 or 39.00 fee for missing a payment -- which would only happen if I were away on vacation or had a medical issue. I think I paid something like $2.65 in interest last year. (p.s. I always show my veterans ID -- which is obtainable through a VA clinic, and 95% of the time they give me the 10% discount any time of the year. There is one older lady that will not and if I see her as the only check out person, I wait until another day or go to Lowe's -- depending on urgency of need and cost. I wouldn't sweat a 5.00 purchase for instance.) Make sure you get your Veterans ID from a VA clinic and then ask the clerk as you go to check out at the self check out "Can I use my veterans ID here at the self check out?". You will find virtually every one will look at the ID and scan in their authorization badge.

Some time in November we shopped both Home Depot and Lowes for a washer dryer set. Both had the same ones on sale for the same price. HD would not give a veterans/military discount on top of the sale price. Lowes did. Guess who got the sale.

If Lowes stopped giving the active service and vet discount on appliances and anything on sale, they'll lose a lot of sales.

It's not like they lost money on those sales. Are they having financial difficulties? If not, sounds like they are getting greedy, disappointing a lot of loyal active/vet shoppers.

I used to work at Lowe’s, and the policy that was in place at that time was the military discount needed to be attached to the “My Lowe’s “ card. This card is not a credit card, but a tracking program that is used to track, among other things, purchases and the payment method used. Very helpful during returns without receipt as long as you remember to carry the “my Lowe’s” card.

I too am retired military and pay attention and shop at establishments that offer a military discount.

Woke up this morning to an email from Lowe’s announcing a new policy re the 10% military/veteran purchase discount. As of April 1 (interesting choice of date), to receive the discount the veteran must have opened a Lowe’s credit card account and added requested mil/vet info. Sound familiar? I’ll bet this is designed to offset the 10% by banking on a percentage of vets maintaining a credit balance and paying a monthly balance on Lowe’s card vice Visa or other mainstream cc.
For me, I will simply drive about two blocks further up the road from Lowe’s and make a right turn to HD. HD, so far, only asks for an ID to receive the discount. I will use Lowe’s in lieu of HD if HD does not have the product I want; and then the can keep the 10%. With the new policy, I wonder if the cc will be required to be used to obtain the discount.
