I have been told that Home Depot limits the military discount to $500 per year and it's not provided on all items. I have signed up for My Lowes, which is not a credit card, but more of a project card. As far as I know, there isn't a limit on the amount you can receive, but, Lowe's won't "stack" other discounts along with the military discount.
I have to disagree with the last part of your statement. About 5 years ago I purchased there top of the line Kobalt tool chest (the one with the radio and CD player), it was on sale for 1600.00 dollars. The salesman saw my wife and I looking at it and asked if I was interested. We said yes but we thought it was still a little much for our budget. He said let me see what I can do, he talked to his manager and came back and asked me if I was a senior citizen and if I was a veteran, he applied both discounts to the sale price. The upshot was that I walked out of the store with the tool chest for 1400.00 dollars with taxes.
I have also found that if I wearing some sort of service related apparel the cashiers will ask if I am a veteran and apply the discount with out additional verification. I guess it all comes down to the area you live in and how people perceive veterans and if they want to apply the discounts, this has been especially true for Home Depot.
