Hi everyone, I finally got something besides a p&s camera.. as I am sure you read in the title I got a Nikon D5100.. if anyone has any pointers to give me it would be greatly appreciated ... thank you..
Where I bought my camera they offered free classes; so I took those. Play with effects/scenes, take camera off 'auto' and start shooting. This camera has a lot on it, use your manual and start going through all the dials. It is a great camera, I really like mine.

I just bought a D5100 also and I have sent for this book to learn things the Manual doesn't teach you about using the many features
Nikon D5100: From Snapshots to Great Shots (Paperback)

Shoot, shoot and shoot some more. When in doubt shoot again

While it can't hurt to read your manual I couldn't keep awake for it or recall much from it.
I recommend David Bush's book on the D51000 and Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure. The first will help you on how to set things up and the second will tell you what you do with it.

http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/d5100/users-guide/index.htmOh, yeah...I keep forgetting that. Very good indeed.
I'm told the CD that comes with the camera has a lot more info than the manual.
You will love your new camera. I purchased an extra battery, and glad I did. Have fun!
Hi Bstreeter,
Congrats on the camera. Along with reading the manual, there is a great book that you can buy on Amazon 'Nikon 5100, From Snapshots to Great Shots'. It doesn't replace the manual, but goes into deeper detail on why and when you should use different features.
Here are a few of my shots that I took after I went through the book, I also have a 5100 obviously and I am upgrading to a 7000 for my studio shots.

The real manual is on the CD in pdf form.
There are also some simple videos which are good when you are first starting.
I printed out most of the manual but hardly ever use the printed version because you can search the pdf on on your computer by using "Ctrl F".
