The Amur (formerly Siberian) tiger is native to the forested areas of Siberia. However, due to habitat lose and hunting it now exists only in the Amur District of Russia along the Chinese border. The species name was changed in 1984. There are only about 500 in the wild. Russia has created a National Park in the region with the goal of increasing their numbers. The Amur tiger is the largest of all cats with the adult male weighing 800 lb.
The photos were taken this winter at the Detroit Zoo's one acre Tiger Forest Habitat. The two tigers seen are two-year old brothers that were born at the Columbus Zoo in Ohio. Downloading is recommended.
