Not my favorite but my husband loves car shows. Difficult to find shots without a mob of folks admiring the cars ....

Very nice. These are the type of car shots I especially like - interesting and unique details.
Not to date myself but I do remember those hood ornaments and everyone trying to get a more unique ornament for their car.

Best times to photograph, I found, are at set up and tear down. During these two periods, the owners are more available to talk about their babies. Sometimes they will highlight a specific item or aspect that may prove to be the shot.
Often there will be models that are not as "attractive" to the mobs. Yet, many have their individuality. Those you can shoot easily without too many people getting in the way.
Moving in close is a good way to do it. The cluttered backgrounds are always a problem. I like to use my 10-20 and try to find dynamic perspectives.

I really love hood ornaments from the '20s and '30s automobiles.
The key is to use aperture to get bokeh in the background and blur out the people.

Do you use flash to help with that?
The first is great. Unfortunately the cropped little bit of
the hood ornament is eye catching, IMHO.
I loved it.

These shows can be a challenge. People, lighting and accessibility. Many of us like cars, so don’t pass on a good shot. You enlighten me to some different angles.
Your reflection in the Crosley propeller grill is interesting - intentional?

Not intentional! I had a shot I liked better but the reflection was much worse!

Well shot! Add a little fill-flash and bingo!!!! I do a lot of automobile related photography and really enjoy when a photographer, such as you, really “get” the shot! Your eye for detail spins a wonderful yarn for the viewer’s mind to imagine and play with. All to often, IMHO, profiles of automobiles are the focus of car shoots. I sometimes find that those shots miss the mark and become repetitively boring, almost simply a recording of the event as they don’t seem to grab the “magic” of the moment & one’s imagination. Good work!
Cheers!
Although the crowds of onlookers at car shows test one's patience, I still like to photograph the entire car and if the hoods are open, capture the engine as well. If there is a particularly interesting feature of the vehicle, be it a hood ornament or chrome item I will try to get a close-up of that as well. If there are people just lingering around a vehicle and chatting, I find that they will move if asked politely. Being a "gearhead" I like to capture as much of a vehicle as is possible, sometimes from a unique angle or viewpoint.
