Egret with bug...
Sacramento Wildlife Refuge, Nikon D500, with Nikon 200-500 f/5.6 lens very early in morning. Shot from car into ditch where egret was hunting. I had no control over background, other than camera settings, nor was I able to get out of the car. Shot at 1/2000 and f/5.6. Processed in LR and PS. I think an appropriate title could be "Yum, Yum." Actually I've learned that egrets, and most likely other similar birds, simply gulp their victims whole and alive, not a nice thought! This bug suffered that fate.
Great Photo, huge Bug !!!

Nice photo! Yes, they are not very kind to their prey. I noticed they walk through the creek and stir up the water with their webbed feet, bringing out small shrimp and other sea life to eat.
Great catch, wonderful photo!
Wowsa Connie! What a fascinating right time/right place photo.
You get what you get. Yech.
Great clarity and it tells a story. Well done. vz
Couldn't ask for better timing. Excellent detail in download.

Nice, clear enough to make out a largish fly.
When one of these goes after larger prey they stab, then toss it into the air to catch and position head down to swallow, swallowing whole, as you said.
For smaller prey, even mice, they snap the bill closed with enough force to stun the prey, then swallow with little reguard to position.
Again whole.
And in download it looks like this may be a second snap, the coup de gras.
Bill
Nothing like being in the right place at the right time with the right gear! Very nice shot.
