Struggles with Photoshop CC 2020

I have been using the Photoshop CC Photographers Package for the last few years, and for the most part very happy with it. I have a more-than-adequate desktop machine, and a so-so laptop (that I use when I lead a Photoshop study group).

After upgrading from 2019 to 2020, I've noticed that the new package is much more sluggish than the 2019 version. My desktop machine can handle it without too much issue, but my laptop really struggles with it, and I had to revert back to 2019.

Has anyone else noticed this with the 2020 version?

I use my machines similarly, desktop for photo work and elderly laptop for teaching a few LR and PS classes. I hit this wall with my old laptop last year. Pulled the DVD drive out and replaced it with an SSD, and it made all the difference in the world. Current 2020 programs are snappy and responsive even with the elderly processor.

thanks minniev, that sounds like a great idea. I didn't realize that an SSD could go into a DVD drive bay. this damn HP laptop is not very user friendly as far as upgrading goes - I'll look into it.

Mine is an old Mac Pro. I just googled and found a you tube video and followed it. Cloned the HD to the SSD, then reformatted the original HD and moved all images and docs to it, then eliminated images/docs from the SSD. The SSD is the boot drive but the old HD acts as a second internal drive. Both drives have adequate breathing space. I did have to buy a tray thingy to hold the SSD in that slot. Tray cost about $5 on Amazon.

minniev,

did you transfer your entire windows system to the new SSD drive? Or were you able to just install the new photoshop cc stuff on the SSD drive with good results?

I’m mac so it’s a Mac OS but yes, I put the OS and all the programs on the SSD and the photos and files on the old HD. I took the opportunity to get rid of any programs I wasn’t using to pare things down, so now I have the OS, LR Classic, LR CC, Photoshop 2020, DXO, Apple Photos, and my Office suite and browsers all on the SSD, but all text and image files on the old hard drive. I had to re link the LR catalog it that’s easy.

I outlined my steps in my second post.

There may be multiple ways to skin this cat but this one worked for me. The laptop was pretty much useless until I did this.

Thanks again, I just ordered the 'caddy' and a 1 TB SSD. All for less than $120

I have a 2 year old HP Envy 17 inch laptop. It came with a 1Tb spinning drive. I swapped it for a 1Tb Samsung SSD. I got a USB to SATA cable, plugged it into my machine, and cloned the original drive with the free version of Macrium Reflect. After that, the trick was getting the bottom off of the machine. It required tiny star screwdrivers. Once I bought a set of those and after reading the instructions in the service manual, swapping the drives was easy. Not all laptops require anything more than a Philips screwdriver. Check your model if you want to do this. Download the service manual.

The difference was night and day.

Yes I did. I finally called Adobe and complained. The first time the guy remotely logged on to my computer and made some changes which helped. Still not satisfied I called them again, a couple of weeks later and complained. This time the rep again logged on remotely and made some changes. She was quite good and it took her awhile to make numerous changes but there was a significant improvement. Also note, I have an SSD C drive.

I wasn't able to upgrade without changing my system software because it is in 64-bit now.

I tried the new version of the Adobe suite and dumped it in favor of My Adobe Suite CS6.
