Well, I will be going to Scotland and Ireland in a few months and am looking for suggestions or recommendation to accommodate my camera against my chest for quick access and protection for the camera from weather, security, and banging it around while walking. I have the D850 with a 28-300 lens. The camera strap I use is the Upstrap brand and is great for normal usage while holding the camera along side my hip, but isn't very effective inside stores, restaurants, general travel, and other situations. I envisioned a plate that I could attach the camera too it so I could conceal carry with a coat on, yet be readily accessible for photo ops while still protecting the camera from possible self-induced damage. Any suggestions or products out there? Thanks for any response.

I have the same combination of camera/lens/strap. I've really never had a problem carrying it anywhere. Additionally, I also use a 24~70 f/2.8 which is larger than the lens you mentioned. Same thing, no problem carrying it through a number of varying trails, walks, hikes, etc.

Upstrap may have something you can use with your current strap. I'm not familiar with their entire inventory.

Consider Cotton Carrier. I used that on my trip last year to Scotland and Ireland

You've run into the classic dilemma of having an amazing, but large, camera and want to use it to document travel. What do you do with it when you want to have lunch in the amazing and crowded local cafe? Where do you put it when it doesn't fit the hotel room safe? Is the trip about the camera or about travel?

We solved it by buying capable travel cameras. Committed DSLR investors don't like it, but smaller sensors can actually capture good images!

After years of dragging my DSLR kit around on trips, I bought a Canon G9x pocket size camera. No regrets, it makes travel and tourist stuff so much easier. And the images are great, at least for my purposes, prints up to 20 inches so far, etc. And from what I've read, the G9x is considered the "low end" of the small camera range. So think small and enjoy your trips.

Buy a classic messenger bag that’s “just” big enough. BTW, you won’t be fooling anyone. The way to go unnoticed (but not totally) is thru use of a compact P&S, imho.

I use a cross body strap. Leaves my hands free and I can tuck the camera inside my jacket if need be. It even works in restaurants. When traveling, I go light with just one or two lenses so if I have to use the safe what I bring will fit. I also shoot micro 4/3s so size is less of a problem for me.

Fuji X100F or X100V.

Now, you can enjoy the trip.

Cotton Carrier puts the camera on your chest and leaves your hands free. I feel like it's a very safe way to carry a camera - both against theft and damage.

Not yet mentioned is how much better the results can be using a "friendly" sized camera. Full sized DSLRs will often have an "off putting" effect on the people living and working where you are traveling. In other words, results from tourist traveling photography can be better with a quality, but small, camera.

Meaning no offense I am always amused at posts where people tell us they are going to a different country and want suggestions on carrying the camera or better security tips. What situations do you think you will find in Scotland and Ireland that is not here in America?

To hopefully answer your question check out Cabela's or Bass Pro Shops if in your area for a harness that holds binoculars/a camera close to your chest to keep it from swinging around.

Have a great trip,

Dennis

I use this product when I am riding my bike in Grassy Waters in Florida. But it will do what you want.
