Several days ago I purchased a new Canon 90D. I am not a tech guy but I seemed to have more than my share of trouble getting up and running with the new rig. I've gotten to the point now where I have a handle on it. First of all, Canon in their infinite wisdom no longer includes an interface cable with their cameras. Also, do not include the start up CD, everything has to be downloaded from the web, and you all know how well that works. It wasn't until I was well into the process that I found out that the new didgi 8 processor is not comparable with any of the digi6 software. And I did not find that from Canon. None of the dozen or so interface cables I have laying around here will work. B&H really came through on this one. So here's a big "atta boy" for B&H and a bucket of sour grapes to Canon.

I am looking at the 90D and am curious about your problems

New tech generations ahead of old - usually takes time to get used to so good luck on the learning adventure

First of all, Canon in their infinite wisdom no longer includes an interface cable with their cameras.
Don't know about the cable - personally I have never used the ones I got

Also, do not include the start up CD, everything has to be downloaded from the web, and you all know how well that works.
I have never had any trouble downloading from the Canon support site. But I pay the cable company for an upgraded high speed connection. And I find that around my house CD/DVDs get misplaced but the Canon support site never does-it is always right there. Just what kind of trouble are you having?

It wasn't until I was well into the process that I found out that the new didgi 8 processor is not comparable with any of the digi6 software.
Do you mean "not compatible"? And in what way. It is two generations beyond the digi6

And I did not find that from Canon. None of the dozen or so interface cables I have laying around here will work. B&H really came through on this one. So here's a big "atta boy" for B&H and a bucket of sour grapes to Canon.[/quote

B&H does definitely have good customer support

Nothing uncommon about the 90D cables unless you haven't had a need for anything newer than cables from 5 to 10 years ago. Technology is constantly changing You need to be prepared for that. What exactly do you need the cable for? I haven't attached a cable to any of my Canon bodies in years. What incompatible software are you referring to? With regards to downloading software from the web, its far and away the best way to go. Fast and seemless, and you never have to worry about storing, damaging, or losing a CD. I stream all my software and movies these days with no problems. I have dozens of costly software programs on my computers and none of them have installation software on disk any more. Not really an issue these days unless you have a particularly unstable connection or are still on dial-up.

Well, it's obvious that I'm not as savvy as you guys. Guess I'll take my ball and go home...

Or maybe just take some the time and learn the new things you need to know. If we can do it, so can you. If you can learn how to use a camera as complex as a 90D, this other stuff is minor by comparison.

Best suggestion....New camera instructions are always overwhelming. Take a deep breath. The best way that I handle the situation is familiarizing with the mechanics. Use the camera and experiment with it until you feel comfortable. Make a list of what you cannot do and take to your local camera store. They would be glad to assist you 👍

What they should be telling you is ....."Call Canon customer support". Instead of bragging about how much they already know. Canon support is the best.

I use the cable whenever I attach the camera to my telescope. I can see live view of Jupiter and Saturn and stars so I can obtain the best focus. Sometimes cabling is important. As far as the CD, many laptops dont even have a CD ROM and download is usually the only way.

I remember in the early 1990s when Apple did away with floppy drives for CD drives and the world was gonna end.😳😎

The 90D has USB III and not mini USB or standard micro USB, although it will work.
He would need to update his DPP software
I suspect that at some time in the near future Canon will switch to USB C as the file sizes get larger.

I can see this being an issue if the OP is not "tech savvy".
BTW, +1 for calling Canon Customer Support.

When I got my 90D, downloading from Canon's website wasn't fast and seamless. Their interface that's supposed to allow downloading of photos directly from the camera (via cable, of course) didn't work at all. I tried it several times and it couldn't be recognized. The only way I could do it was by buying a new card reader. Canon's interface for the 70D was so simple to use. That's how I prefer to download photos. It also worked for the 6D MkII as well but the newest version doesn't.

My brother purchased a Canon 90D and called me 5x the first week to talk about new things he found out about it. I love learning a new camera (I’ve had an 80D for years after upgrading from a T5i). He stopped talking about his new camera when I asked to borrow it. 😊

Camera are still fairly simple, start in manual mode, set he shutter speed, set the aperture, set the ISO, focus. press the shutter button, review image, adjust and repeat. All the other adjustments, and settings you can learn as you need them.
Canon has decent support, and I use some of there free software quite regularly.
